Breaking News : Maada Bio at it again. Bloodshed in Makeni. Many Youths dead

Sierra Leone security forces have opened fire and killed many  youths protesting the attempts by the government to remove the thermal electricity generator in Makeni  and send it to Lungi.  Five young people are said to have been killed during the ongoing running battles between the youths of Makeni and the Police.
Again, questions will be asked about  the wisdom to use live bullets to control  a  demonstration against this government, which has killed many civilians recently in such civil  protests in other parts of the country. But many people say  today’s killings are a fulfillment of the threats made two months ago by the Resident Minister, Mr. Abu Abu Koroma who said that Police and soldiers will shoot and kill anyone who protests against this SLPP Government—An irresponsible statement for which he was briefly suspended by President Bio before he was reinstated.
The chaos broke out this morning when news spread that the thermal unit in Makeni was going to be removed and transferred to Lungi. The people got no  prior official  notice about this move by the government , so youths who perceived that it was an attempt to stop the flow of regular electricity in the town came out to resist the move. This  led to the running battles that have been going on in the town today between soldiers and police, leading to the shooting of the youths.
Since President Bio came to power in 2018, there have been serious human rights abuses in Sierra Leone and many people in the opposition strongholds have been killed in confrontations with the Police and soldiers.  The international community has remained largely silent over Mr. Bio’s human rights abuses and killings of civilians by security officers.

Running battles continue in the Northern City of Makeni between irate youths protesting the removal of a 1MW Caterpillar generator by EGTC and police firing gun shots and canister tear gas.

It all started last night when news went round the city that a team had arrived at the power house to fetch the said generator to Lungi.

EGTC official said they had had prior consultations with local authorities regards the said movement of the generator.

As the situation escalate there is report of some youths fired with fire rounds.

The ruling party office on Yiks Rd is reported damaged by irate youths.

Felix Marco Conteh is feeling sad.

What’s happening in Makeni reflects a failure of governance – plain and simple. Assuming the statement from the Ministry of Energy (MoE) reflects the entire truth, the youths who have been on the rampage in Makeni were never in those rooms where the idea of loaning the Makeni standby generator to Lungi, was discussed. Given our toxic politics, all the MoE and Makeni authorities needed was a more public stakeholder engagement, keeping everyone informed before the removal of the generator. Sadly, as always lives have been lost. It’s not looking good…

News flash,18 July 2020

Armed officers shot and killed youths in Makeni, Northern headquarter city in Sierra Leone, for protesting against the government’s decision to remove electricity plant from Makeni and transfer it to Lungi.

This came against the backdrop of the resident minister’s threat to shot and kill anyone who demonstrated against his government.

President Bio had suspended him indefinitely, but barely after a month, the president reinstated him to the same position he had abused by threatening the lives of the people.

Violence from anyone in this our nascent democracy is not allowed. Systems are put in place for effective operations and production if a desired effect. Lungi just recently had generators, why all of a sudden it is in need of repairs and parts?
