Sierra Stars stage dance in Dallas and give out awards

PDF Print E-mail

As the famous Waterford crystal ball was dropping on Times Square in New York amidst the spectacular display of fireworks and confetti so was Sierra Stars and fans dropping it hot and doing it big on the dance floor in Big D-Texas. This New Year’s Eve bash was celebrated in a grandiose fashion reminiscence of the good old days in Sierra Leone. The year of our lord two thousand and ten was ushered in on an upbeat note with hope – A year that many Sierra Leoneans and other revelers in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex expect will bring good tidings and break through in their lives. The prestigious and upscale United Banquet hall was this year’s scenic ambiance. It was festooned with the high life and fast pace rhythms of Sierra Leone, the glitzy lights and glamour, to the energy and excitement which made their rounds in the hall.

Unlike many of the gatherings and dances in the metroplex, which are for the most part, arguably, needlessly accented with political undercurrent and the trappings of partisan bellicose over patriotic solidarity, Sierra Stars celebration of the New Year was on a class of its own. It was devoid of the wheezing political speeches and gaffes and, posture of empty personal egos that have characterized our dance scenes lately. Last night was simply different because it transcended politics, personality and ethnicity.

In his opening remarks, the President of Sierra Stars, Mr. Patrick Dangawalie, lauded all for their support to Sierra Stars over the years. He reiterated the need to have a club like Sierra Stars which serves as an umbrella club for Sierra Leoneans in the DFW area. He particularly commended the team for their selfless sacrifice in flying our beloved green, white and blue flag sky high night and day.

Although three outstanding members of the team were singled out for an award demonstrating their commitment and sense of responsibility to the team, yet the most notable highlight of the night was the award given to two fine and outstanding personalities in the community.

Congratulations to Florence Campbell, President of Sisters of Sierra Leone and Sanpha Sesay, PRO for Sierra Stars who is also a correspondent for the Internet media, Cororioko, Patriotic Vanguard, and Sierra Express Media in Texas. Both of them won an award for their leadership role and commitment the activities of the community. According to Sanpha Sesay, “Florence Campbell has been relentless in her support to Sierra Stars over the years and has shown an acute sense of patriotism and as such she deserves nothing less”.

The rest of the night went on smoothly as guests danced the old year out. If there is one place you would have enjoyed spending your new year’s eve, it was an evening with the darling soccer team, Sierra Stars of Dallas.

And, for all those agonizing on a failed 2009, Patrick Dangawalie has a message for you, “Don’t give up.”
