Sierra Leone High Commission steps in over death of man in Scotland Police custody

THE family a 31-year-old man who died in police custody have met with diplomatic officials over the case.

 Representatives of the Sierra Leone High Commission in the UK met with the family of Sheku Bayoh, who was detained by police during the incident in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on Sunday and died a short time later in custody, and their lawyer Aamer Anwar.

The talks were held as the family, who flew to Scotland after the death, prepare to meet with Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland over the case and a police watchdog probe continues.

More than 6,000 people have now supported an online campaign over the death of Mr Bayoh, as the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), set up to probe serious incidents involving the police, investigates.

Mr Anwar met with the Sierra Leone government officials in Glasgow.

Mr Bayoh, who had two children, reportedly moved to Scotland to start a new life after fleeing the civil war in Sierra Leone and lived with his partner Collette and baby son Isaac.

He said that “serious concerns were raised” over the incident.

Mr Anwar said the High Commission officials are expected to meet with Scottish Government representatives.

Police Scotland are unable to comment while the investigation is ongoing.

Man who died in police custody after Fife incident named

A man who died during an incident in which a female police officer was injured has been named.

A Police Scotland statement said 31-year-old Sheku Ahmed Tejan Bayoh died and a female police officer was injured during the incident in Kirkcaldy on Sunday.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), set up to investigate serious incidents involving the police, is leading an inquiry into the matter.

A spokesperson for PIRC said: “I can confirm that the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has directed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) to carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 31 year old Sheku Ahmed Tejan Bayoh in Kirkcaldy on Sunday 3 May who had been detained by police shortly before his death.

“A report on the PIRC’s findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course.”

Fife Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Garry McEwan said: “This is a tragic set of circumstances and my condolences go to the man’s family.

“The investigation of deaths in Scotland is the responsibility of Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, who have instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner to lead on this enquiry.”

Police watchdogs have met with the family of a father who died following an incident in which a police officer was also injured as investigations continue.

Sheku Bayoh, 31, was detained by police during Sunday’s incident in Kirkcaldy, Fife, and died a short time later in custody.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), set up to investigate serious incidents involving the police, is leading an inquiry into the matter.

It held a meeting yesterday with the family and their solicitor to update them on the progress of the investigation, and said that liaison with the family will continue.

The PIRC said that the response to an appeal for information from the local community has been “heartening” but said it is important that anyone else with information contact them.

The incident happened in Hayfield Road near to Hendry Road, Kirkcaldy, between 7am and 8am on Sunday May 3.

PIRC investigators are continuing with house-to-house investigations in Hayfield Road.
