The main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has been involved in the process. The APC representative attended a preliminary meeting on January 27, 2026, stating that the party’s support depends on the process being procedural and legal .
The Constitutional Amendment Bill had its First Reading in Parliament on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 .
The amendment process is part of a larger, long-running constitutional review .

1. Presidential Election Threshold: Change in the First-round winning requirement from 55% to a simple majority of 50%+1, with at least *20% of the votes in two-thirds of the country’s voting districts.
2. Change in the electoral system:* Change from First-Past-The-Post (Constituency) model to the Proportional Representation (PR) System, eliminating by-elections.
3. Removal of President and Vice President: Only Parliament by a two-thirds majority can remove a sitting President or Vice-President who has been expelled from the political party under which they were elected.
4. Appointment of the Chief Electoral Commissioner: President will not directly appointment the Chief Electoral Commissioner, but he will now appoints a Search and Nomination Committee to nominate the electoral commissioner who must meet certain requirements.
5. Fixed date for general elections: General elections will now be held on the Second Saturday of November of every election year.
6. Women Representation: At least 30% of a political party’s nominees for national and local government elections must be women.
7. Independent Candidate for President: Independent candidates scan now contest for president. Presidential candidates are no longer compelled to contest for under a political party as long as they meet the requirements to contest for president.
8. Period to resign from any public office to contest as member of parliament now reduced from 12 months to 6 months.
9. Petitioning of election result: Period within which a dissatisfied candidate can file a petition in the Supreme Court against election results now reduced from 7 days to 3 days* after the result is announced.
