ECOWAS insisted that the well acclaimed statesman must be allowed to leave the country following what the state called a failed coup attempt on Sunday November 26th. The statesman was accused of being part of the coup plot and was last week charged with treason and other three offences.

  1. Many believed that a man who conducted peaceful, free from violence elections and gracefully handed over power, could not be involved in overthrowing a govt, especially through a military coup. The charges against him have therefore been widely viewed as politically motivated trumped up charges
