The surreptitious dealings of the founder of the National Grand Coalition ( NGC ), Dr. Kandeh Yumkella , who this week resigned from the party to align himself with President Maada Bio of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP) , has completely wrecked the dream of a third political force in Sierra Leone to challenge the dominance of the SLPP and the opposition All People’s Congress ( APC).
The main face of the party, the man who has been doing all the talking for the NGC, the Chairman, Dr. Dennis Bright, who many Sierra Leoneans had predicted would not compromise his integrity to follow Kandeh Yumkella to the SLPP, rightly resigned today from the NGC, 24 hours after another top member, the Diaspora Chairman, Mr. Alan Luke also announced his resignation in protest against Yumkella’s decision to jump ship to the SLPP.
Chairman and Leader Dr. Dennis Bright, North American Regional Chairman Haroun Zubairu, Deputy Secretary General, Nyamacoro Sillah, and the Regional Chairman, Western Region, Arthur Pearce have tendered their resignation from their positions and the NGC Party.
The resignations of these officials, especially Dr. Bright, has put a huge dent on the future of the NGC as Sierra Leoneans on social media lament the seeming demise of an opposition party that raised their hopes of seeing the end of the duopoly of the SLPP and APC, whom Sierra Leoneans accuse of failing the nation.
The disappointment over the apparent collapse of the NGC will run deep because Dr. Dennis Bright had really given a great account of himself as the Spokesman of suffering and aggrieved Sierra Leoneans with stinging attacks on the SLPP for its rampant corruption, misrule, horrific human rights abuses and destroying democracy and the rule of law in Sierra Leone.
Kandeh Yumkella is being blamed by Sierra Leoneans who perceive him now as a man lacking in integrity and never true to his word that he was going to stand against bad governance and provide hope for the people when he formed the NGC IN 2017. “KKY is a disgrace and total failure in Sierra Leone — he failed himself and failed his followers,” Foday Acto Sesay complained on Facebook, where there have been more scathing attacks on the NGC founder.
