*_Opposition APC MPs Suspend Participation from all Activities and Committee in Parliament_*
The Parliamentary Leader of the Opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Hon. Abdul Kargbo has officially released an immediate suspension of participation in all parliamentary sittings and committee activities.
This decision arises from concerns surrounding the Clerk of Parliament, Paran Umar Tarawally, who is reportedly contesting for an executive position within the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
In a press statement signed by Hon. Abdul Kargbo, the Leader of the Opposition, the APC expressed that this situation undermines the neutrality and integrity of the Clerk’s office, which is expected to maintain a strictly non-partisan stance in its service to Parliament.
The opposition has demanded the resignation or dismissal of the Clerk, arguing that his “open involvement in partisan politics is incompatible with the impartial and administrative responsibilities of his office.”
They stressed that Parliament is a national institution that must remain free from political bias at all administrative levels, asserting that the Clerk’s conduct “threatens public confidence in the institution’s independence and credibility.”
The statement noted that the Speaker has informed the opposition that a formal reply will be provided within one week. The opposition clarified that their action is not aimed at disrupting governance but rather at “safeguarding the ethical standards that underpin our democracy.”
Affirming their commitment to the rule of law, institutional integrity, and national interest, the opposition stated that upon receiving the Speaker’s response, they will return to Parliament to formally address the matter and determine the appropriate next steps in defense of democratic accountability.
