IMC warns against such dangerous rumoursThe Independent Media Commission views with great concern newspaper reports about mercenaries being engaged from Nigeria by the government to wreak havoc in the country during the August 11th elections.
The Commission warned that such articles that are likely to create panic and fear in the minds of the public, should be avoided.
It noted the Media Code of Practice for the coverage of elections, drawn up by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists and the United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone agreed upon, has been incorporated into IMC Media Code of Practice.
IMC therefore advised Editors to strictly observe the Media Code of Practice and desist from publishing articles of such nature, when they have no credence.
The commission called on journalists to exercise the greatest caution in their coverage and reportage of events and issues leading to the election to maintain national cohesion and unqualified peace.
