UN ENVIRONMENT HONORS EPA-SL EXECUTIVE CHAIRPERSON

By Amin Kef

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has appointed the Executive Chairperson of the Environment Protection Agency – Sierra Leone (EPA-SL), Madam Haddijatou Jallow as Ambassador and Executive member of the Africa Women Energy Entrepreneurs Framework (AWEEF). AWEEF is a product of the sixteenth session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) held in Gabon in June 2017. It aims to fulfill the AMCEN decision on Investing in innovative environmental solutions to accelerate the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063. The framework was launched on the 3rd December 2017 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Assembly.

The appointment of Madam Haddijatou Jallow is in recognition of her outstanding leadership role during her tenure as Chair of the African Ministers and Leaders on the environment, a position she still holds. Through the immense support of His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and his government, Madam Jallow has succeeded in projecting Sierra Leone as a country that has made significant progress in environmental governance. In 2017, Sierra Leone was designated as a center of excellence by the Abidjan Convention Secretariat. Furthermore, due to the government’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection and management, Sierra Leone currently serves as the Vice President of the Abidjan Convention and is also Chairman of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the West African constituency.

This latest appointment is another indication of Madam Jallow’s hard work and commitment to sound environmental management in Sierra Leone.

Madam Haddijatou Jallow graduated with an LLM in Environmental Law from the prestigious George Washington University 20 years ago. She is happily married and with children.
