Our government is now working with the World Bank to provide emergency power for the next 12 months starting in December. I think this is great and would be good for the country and the economy. Do you think our government will be ready in a year’s time to switch over to a more permanent solution such as Bumbuna, NPA, etc? What do you think about this development? Would be interested in hearing your thoughts!

Just a couple of comments on this topic:
1. The Prince of Wales School, a Government School, with support from its Alumni in the Diaspora is currently working on a project to implement Solar Power for its new Computer Center at their school in Kingtom. 2. The initial capacity of Bumbuna will be 50 MW. However, 50 MW will be generated only during the rainy seasons. The capacity will be reduced suring the dry season because the water level in the dam will be reduced and so less energy will be generated. This is the same reason why the Power supply from the Dam in Bo has to be supllemented by Thermal Power (Diesel Generators) during the dry season/

I know solar energy can be more expensive, but I’ve often wondered why it hasn’t been a natural alternative for Africa. Does anyone know if solar energy has been explored as an option in Sierra Leone?
It’s hard to know if Sierra Leone will be ready in 12 months without knowing if there is a sustainability plan in place. A year seems like a short period of time based on the challenges that have been outlined on this forum, but who knows.

Yep, them solar panels are expensive. One country in Europe- I think it’s Portugal- is building a solar power station for commercial purposes to the tune of billions of dollars.
However, we can learn from the example of India which has been able to develop very cheap wafers for modest but important steps toward rural electrification. Solar technology has been applied to cooking utensils, reducing the deforestation in the Indian countryside. Also, the cheap solar panels have been used to light low wattage electric bulbs in rural areas that have never experienced electricity.

thats a good plan. i dont know much about bumbuna but i have a question for those of you familiar with the area its at. does this area provide enough rain supply year round>? an dhas neva had a drought in teh past? I am just asking because lets not put all our eggs in one basket and things dont work out well. I was reading the other day about two of Ghanas dams that could not supply electricity because of droughts in those areas. how is teh situation looking in regards to drought in that area in the near future? has that been looked into?

Drought has never been a threat to Salone and will never be in the future.First let the Bumbuna stuff which has been in the making for nearly a century be completed, then we can think of solutions for the unexpected.

I honestly don’t know the drought susceptibility of the Bumbuna area. However, you have a point about hydro power stations always performing subpar because of low water levels. As a matter of fact the hydroelectric station, supplying Bo and Kenema, has been experiencing the same kind of problem.
