When Maada Bio took that stage at SLPP’s 75th anniversary celebration, you could feel the disconnect hit like a slap. There he was, laying out the perfect blueprint for SLPP’s next leader and presidential candidate: someone who unifies their party from within, bridges divides across the nation, tribes, regions, personalities, and handles criticism with real maturity. The crowd applauded. But for anyone paying attention, it rang completely hollow.

This is a man whose entire rise was built on ripping SLPP apart. In his fight for party leadership, he created enemies everywhere he turned. He sent thugs to physically attack and humiliate Kandeh Yumkella’s mother, throwing urine on her, an act so low it defies belief.

He openly threatened civil war if 2018 didn’t deliver him the presidency. He blocked President Ernest Bai Koroma’s convoy in what was clearly a treasonous move aimed at something much darker.

He handed airtime subscription and backing to people like London Jet, whose every word was threats and filth.

He told his supporters flat out that social media rudeness was the road to power. Now, after all that, he has the nerve to demand a “decent unifier” from his own party?

His wife, Fatima Bio, once declared that if you’re not SLPP, you’re not a Sierra Leonean. Once they won power, she used her platform to stir up mob justice against anyone criticizing her husband. Zainab Sheriff became the living example of what that looks like.

As president since 2018, Maada Bio’s record speaks for itself. Targeted killings, but only of Northwesterners. Mass arrests of opposition figures. The sexual assault of Dr. Sylvia Blyden under his watch. APC offices burned down by state security and Paopa Thugs. Nurse Hawa murdered. Opposition media leader Evangelist Sampson killed. Opposition MPs removed just so he could control parliament completely. Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma disgraced and driven into exile.

He turned PPRC, CID, and the courts into weapons. APC Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya spoke the truth about the 2023 elections? Fined, arrested, imprisoned. Zainab Sheriff faced the same. It’s a clear pattern: opposition raises their voice, and the state crushes it. Chaos wasn’t an accident, it was the plan.

On Radio Democracy 98.1, during the country’s worst tensions, he even admitted, “Sierra Leone is divided, and there’s nothing I can do about it.” That’s a president confessing failure while it burned.

Today, with SLPP staring down rejection and potential collapse, he’s suddenly preaching unity across every line and the need to handle criticism well. Why now? Because he knows exactly what his years of “my way or no way”

created: reckless, divisive forces inside his own party that have turned the nation against him. A new generation of voters, the ones who’ll decide Sierra Leone’s future for decades, will carry that resentment forward.

Look at the frontrunners that are set up to follow him. Fatima Bio, mother/founder of mob justice and of diverting funds and building estates in her original birth country The Gambia while parking the rest of stolen fund in offshore accounts. Her speeches so indecent that people tune out.

David Sengeh, aka “Kadiatu” his nationwide name, for acting like a child in a man’s body, arrogant, demanding respect he hasn’t earned, with nothing real to show.

Inside SLPP, the damage is eating it alive. Brown envelope bribes everywhere, called themselves Dogment. Delegate elections that feel like war zones. The open secret slaps exchanged right in front of Maada Bio. Factions like Ehbema versus RIM tearing everything apart. If he’s warning about internal threats, he should remember he created them with Paopa, the same machine that sidelined the loyal fighters who got him to power in the first place.

Here’s what stinks for every Sierra Leonean watching this: Maada Bio spent years building division and beasts within his party as a strategy. He normalized rudeness and threats as politics. He used state power to silence opposition. He delivered stagnation and fracture. And now he demands the total opposite from the people who come after him.

It’s hypocrisy that doesn’t just fool anyone, it’s impossible to ignore. He preaches exactly what his own actions destroyed.

SLPP’s troubles didn’t come from outside; they came from him (the beasts he has created within). His legacy won’t be leadership. It’ll be a divided nation and a party he broke beyond repair, with young Sierra Leoneans ready to make sure it’s remembered that way.

Somebody needs to hold up that mirror.
