Another Day of honour for Sierra Leone at the UN, as nation collects MDG Award at prestigious occasion today

Today September 19, 2010 is another Day of Honour and Victory for Sierra Leone as the nation collects a distinguished  United Nations Millenium Development Goal ( MDG )  Award  in recognition of  President Ernest Koroma ‘s remarkable  leadership commitment and progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Goal Six. The award will be bestowed during a Dinner and Awards Event at the Waldorf Estoria Hotel in New York  this evening at 6 : 30 pm , when  the UN  will honour governments and individuals that have made substantial contributions towards the MDGs.

 According to Ms Suzette C. Limchoc, the  Programme Assistant of the UN Office for Partnerships of  UNAIDS Sierra Leone ,The MDG Awards Committee was particularly impressed by Sierra Leone’s achievements in developing an innovative and comprehensive national strategy.

The Goal Six which is combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases have been found out by the world body as successful in Sierra Leone through political will from the Presidency, and collaborative efforts made by the National HIV/ AIDS Secretariat (NAS) in the Office of the President. These achievements have been arrived at by NAS using multi-sectoral approaches to address the epidemic.
The nomination was conducted by a Committee of development professionals within the UN system, with a range of first- hand experiences working towards addressing the MDGs at the ground level. Their efforts are aimed at increasing awareness of the MDGs among the global public and highlighting progress being made by countries towards their achievement, and also showcasing government’s exemplary effort in achieving these Goals by Least Developed Countries (LDC).

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mrs. Zainab Hawa Bangura , who arrived in New York yesterday for the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly , will deputize President Ernest Koroma at the prestigious occasion .
