It has come to the attention of the Office of National Security (ONS) and the Disaster Management Agency that the ongoing heavy rains pose significant risks to lives and property. The Sierra Leone Police, in collaboration with these agencies, urges all citizens to prioritize their safety during this period.
1. **Avoid Flood-Prone Areas:** Residents in unprotected or flood-prone areas are strongly advised to relocate to safer locations immediately. These areas are at high risk of flooding, which can result in severe damage and loss of life.
2. **Stay Informed and Vigilant:** Keep up-to-date with weather forecasts and heed any warnings issued by authorities. Staying informed can help you take timely action.
3. **Safety on Waterways:** Those in coastal and riverine areas should exercise extreme caution. Boat operators and passengers are advised to always wear life jackets and ensure their vessels are in good condition.
4. **Travel Precautions:** If traveling by air or sea, take extra precautions. Flight passengers should allow ample time for check-in and follow all safety instructions. Boat drivers should avoid navigating in severe weather conditions.
5. **Community Cooperation:** Community members are encouraged to look out for one another. If you notice someone in a hazardous situation, help them to safety if possible and alert the authorities.
The ONS Boss urges all Sierra Leoneans to adopt these safety measures and stay vigilant. By working together and staying informed, we can protect ourselves and our communities from the dangers posed by this severe weather.
Thank you for your cooperation and stay safe.
