The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), once held in high regard for its commitment to democratic values and principles, has undergone a disconcerting transformation. This shift towards a mob mentality and gang-like behavior within the party has cast a dark shadow over the nation’s political landscape. This article delves into the profound consequences of this transformation on various aspects of Sierra Leonean society, particularly during the five-year tenure of President Julius Maada Bio. It highlights how misrule, rampant corruption, and unfulfilled promises have eroded the governance system, contrasting it with the era of Ernest Bai Koroma’s All People’s Congress (APC) government, when Sierra Leone enjoyed the status of one of the world’s fastest-growing economies with promising development prospects.

*The Emergence of Mob Mentality*

Historically, SLPP was known for its commitment to democracy, rule of law, and respect for institutions. However, recent years have witnessed a disturbing change within the party. The emergence of the PAOPA faction, marked by its aggressive tactics and mob mentality, has altered the party’s character. This shift towards a more confrontational and divisive approach to politics has polarized the nation.

*The Impact on Governance*

During President Bio’s administration, the effects of this transformation were acutely felt. Misrule and rampant corruption became defining features of his tenure, severely undermining the nation’s governance system. The promise of transparency and accountability made by the PAOPA faction during their nationwide campaigns appeared hollow as allegations of corruption and abuse of power became widespread.

*The Broken Promises*

One of the most disheartening aspects of this transformation is the stark contrast between the promises made by PAOPA and the realities on the ground. Sierra Leone, once lauded as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies with a trajectory towards sustainable development during the Ernest Bai Koroma/APC era, witnessed a concerning decline. Economic growth slowed, and development projects stalled, leaving many citizens disillusioned.

The transformation of SLPP into a party characterized by mob mentality and gang-like behavior has undoubtedly had a detrimental impact on Sierra Leonean society. The governance system suffered under President Bio’s administration, marked by misrule and rampant corruption. The unfulfilled promises made during the PAOPA faction’s campaigns only deepened the sense of disappointment among citizens who had hoped for a brighter future.

As Sierra Leone moves forward, it is essential to reflect on the consequences of this transformation and seek a return to the democratic values and principles that once defined the nation’s politics. The challenges are significant, but a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law can pave the way for a more promising future.

I pause, and pass.
