SLPP Government to promote free for all abortion in Sierra Leone

The proposed “Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Care Act” of 2024, while ostensibly aimed at improving maternal health, contains provisions that have the potential to undermine the sanctity of life. Specifically, Section 9 of the Act poses a grave threat to the unborn.
Section 9(2) of the Act grants women the right to *”terminate a pregnancy.”*

This provision, cloaked in the language of reproductive health, effectively legalizes abortion. Abortion, the deliberate termination of a human life, is a morally reprehensible act that should have no place in a civilized society.

By granting women the right to terminate a pregnancy, the Act disregards the fundamental right to life of the unborn child. It reduces human life to a mere commodity to be discarded at will.

This is a dangerous precedent that could lead to a culture of death, where the lives of the most vulnerable are deemed expendable.

It is important to note that there are numerous safe and effective methods of family planning that do not involve abortion. These methods can help women to plan and space their pregnancies, while also protecting the lives of their unborn children.

By promoting abortion, the Act undermines these proven methods of family planning and encourages a reliance on a procedure that is inherently harmful.
The proposed Act also raises concerns about the potential for abuse. If abortion is legalized, it could be used as a means of sex selection, leading to a gender imbalance.

While it is acknowledged that many women resort to unsafe abortions due to a lack of access to safe and legal services, legalizing abortion is not the solution. Instead, the government should focus on providing comprehensive sexual education, access to contraception, and quality maternal healthcare. By addressing the underlying issues that lead to unsafe abortions, we can reduce the number of abortions wit
