Broken Promises and Rising Costs: The Reality of Sierra Leone’s Staple Food Under the Current Government*

*Topic: Broken Promises and Rising Costs: The Reality of Sierra Leone’s Staple Food Under the Current Government*

In 2018, President Julius Maada Bio criticized the previous APC administration, accusing it of creating suffering through high costs of essential goods, specifically rice the staple food of Sierra Leoneans which was priced at NLe 200 per bag at that time. He positioned himself as the leader who would relieve Sierra Leoneans of these economic burdens.

Today, however, the price of a bag of rice has risen sharply to NLe 1200 under his tenure, a clear reflection of the ongoing and worsening economic struggle faced by citizens. Rather than delivering on his promise to alleviate these burdens, the situation has only intensified, with the cost of living now far beyond what was once deemed unacceptable.

This message serves as a reminder of the president’s own words from 2018 and the stark reality citizens face in 2024. The suffering, which was once blamed on others, has multiplied under his leadership, showing a disconnect between promises made and lived experience. The sharp increase in staple food prices reflects a wider economic crisis that has placed many essential items out of reach for the average Sierra Leonean, and it’s a call to action for accountability and real change.
