The world famous Jimmy Carter Elections Monitoring and Observation team has released its very damning and disgraceful Final Report on the Multi- Tier Elections conducted in Sierra Leone on June 24, 2023.
In the report, the Carter Cenre stated unequivocally thar it has no confidence that the elections expressed the will of the people due to the tabulation process which lacked transparency.
The Carter Centre also disclosed that the pre-election period in Sierra Leone was marked by disputes around the census and registration process , threats against civil society and protests that led to deaths and the detention of political prisoners . It said that attempts by opposition parties to have their complaints addressed were unsuccessful.
The Carter Centre final report also highlights the lack of trust in the independence of the Sierra Leone judiciary and said it was a distrust shared by other political parties in Sierra Leone.
The Report also complains about the targeted harassment and intimidation of elections observers . “International and national observers were summoned and questioned by the Office of National Security (ONS), contributing to a decision by The Carter Center to leave the country. Many members of the public have raised questions regarding the independence of the judiciary, and parties that have electoral complaints do not trust the judiciary to give them a fair and impartial hearing.”
