Sierra Leone is one of the countries where rising ocean levels have seriously started encroaching beaches and coastal settlements as climate change, coupled with environmental damage by Sierra Leoneans themselves and predatory foreign companies, begin to have their predicted devastating effects.
Because of climate change and beach erosion due to extensive sand mining, Sierra Leone is encountering a range of climate impacts—including ocean acidification and sea-level rise –, which have started threatening coastal settlements, beaches and communities.
“Coastal erosion from uncontrolled sand mining has depleted coastal areas. This will be happening at more coastal areas in SL with Spring/Neap tides. Then add on top of that the melting of the ice caps and we are in for a big disaster, a social media commentator, Tracy, writes at the LEONENET WHATSAPP FORUM.
The Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) have their work cut out for them.
