Unable to get sufficient economic aid from the U.S and the West because of their horrible human rights records and for stealing the 2023 elections, the Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) government has gone on a shameful begging spree with China and SLPP media and political circles are seething with praise for China for the bonanza they have promised President Maada Bio during his recent trip to Beijing.
It is sheer hypocrisy to see the SLPP now celebrating China. Having a fraternal and comic relationship with China was one of the SLPP’s flagship campaign fuscillades against the then ruling All People’s Congress ( APC ) in 2018 , leading to the regime change orchestrated by Britain ,who dislike China, and decided tp punish the APC by removing them from power for theit close attachment to China.
The SLPP was very bitter about the APC’s relationship with China and spread all kinds of damaging propaganda at home and abroad that the APC had mortgaged Sierra Leone’s natural resources and economic interests to China.
The SLPP’s Presidential candidate ( Now President ) Maada Bio complained tto Sierra Leone’s international stakeholders and donor partners that then President Ernest Koroma had forfeited Sierra Leone’s sovereignty to Chinese. Maada Bio’s complaints were sweet music to ears of the West , which considers China as a predatory nation to Africa and a threat to Western dominance in this continent.
If China was evil and the APC having bilateral ties with her was equivalent to mortgaging the sovereignty and economic interests of Sierra Leone, why is the SLPP Government doing the same now that they are in power, and making heavy weather of celebrating China’s promises to their government ? So, something is only wrong when done by the APC ?
What is most shameful and ridiculous is the SLPP’s wild celebration the paltry U.S $7 million China gave President Bio last week in China which cannot even pay one month’s salaries of the SLPP overbloated government payroll . Is that what anybody would call goodies and bonanza when China has been giving other Afrocan nations upwards of U.S 200 millions to 500 millions ?
Maada Bio’s SLPP have set the bar so low in Sierra Leone . Their politics stink with hypocrisy and double standards . When the APC does anything. it is wrong ; it is reprehensible: it is damaging to the interests of the country but when the SLPP does the same, it is a marvelous deed and SLPP bloggers, propagandists and sycophants must celebrate it wildly in the nation and social media.
What has also repulsed Sierra Leoneans is that when it comes of mortgaging the country to China, it is the SLPP who have really done it. They have sold to China huge chunks of national resources, assets and economic gains for which the gains to the nation are disproportionately meager. SLPP have mortgaged to China our rail and ports services ; Black Johnson Beach for a fish habour; the Wellington – Masiaka Toll Gate ; the Tonkolili Mines ; our fisheries and marine resources from which the Chinese are goung to ruthlessly ripoff Sierra Leone and what is the country getting in return, commensurate us to what they are reaping ?
Absolutely nothing.
What a shame.
