The drama of politics will never end in Sierra Leone.
The Opposition All People’s Congress ( APC) Executive has called for police protection when the meet with international stakeholders and Moral Guarantors of the Agreement of National Unity at the APC party headquarters tomorrow at Brookfields in Freetown.
It is not known whether the executive fears an open backlash from angry supporters who believe that they have betrayed the party by seemingly not publicly supporting party flagbearer Dr. Samura Kamara’s determined drive for electoral justice.
It is no secret that the APC is presently divided and there is bad blood between Dr. Kamara’s supporters and the executive, who are accused of not being in support of Dr. Kamara and are less interested in electoral justice, pushing instead for the party to move on and prepare for the 2028 elections.
Responding to the request of the executive, the Police who approved it, however took the opportunity to warn subtly about the Public Order act, which forbids what the government refers to as unlawful assembly.
The Police also warned about traffic regulations, all of these giving the impression that ,as feared, the security might clamp down on any planned demonstration at the APC Headquarters tomorrow.
APC social media activists and facilitators are calling for a big demonstration tomorrow during the international stakeholders’ meeting with Dr. Samura Kamara and the very APC executive.
There is an overwhelming belief among APC cadres that if they do demonstrate tomorrow, Bio would not dare to send Police to break up the protests for fear of creating a very bad impression to the facilitators and authenticating wide spread accusations and established belief that the Bio SLPP Government is not democratic and is very despotic and oppressive. The police warning has however given the impression that old ways die hard and Bio might not be ready to prove to the international delegation that he has reinvented himself.
Whatever the facts and plans by the police, the onus is on APC supporters to take advantage of this golden opportunity to demonstrate to the international stakeholders and Moral Guarantors their frustration with the bold- faced thieving of the 2023 elections by President Bio and that they mean business about their cry for electoral justice .
Whatever undemocratic or violent reprisals from the Bio government will count in favour of the APC and Dr. Samura Kamara.
