ICC alert : SLPP cannot account for the whereabouts of hundreds of prisoners in their custody

The SLPP cannot account for about 300 Sierra Leoneans it had jailed and there are speculations that they may have been killed by government death squads.

There were 318 prisoners being held in political detention by the government , mainly for joining protests against the government .

The prisoners are supposed to be freed in accordance with Resolution 4 of the Agreement of National Unity but now the Chief Minister, Dr. Moinina Sengbeh says that out of the 318, there are only 25 present. What happened to all the others ? The Chief Minister has not given any plausible explanation.

The Chief Minister’s explanation that the remaining 303 may have escaped during the last coup attempt in November or served jail terms or were released on court orders after paying fines sounded hollow to many Sierra Leoneans, given President Maada Bio’s bloody human rights records.

Sierra Leoneans are calling on the International Criminal Court ( ICC ) to send a team to Freetown to investigate what happened to the prisoners.
