There is something deeply concerning about the current debate surrounding FGM in Sierra Leone. Many of those leading the campaign today are themselves products of the very system they now condemn, and in many cases, similar practices were accepted within their own families and communities for years. Yet the conversation has increasingly shifted away from meaningful dialogue and towards political point-scoring.

What is particularly disappointing is the attempt by some individuals to create the impression that respected international institutions were somehow involved in advancing a particular agenda. The reality is that universities and public institutions routinely rent out their facilities to various organisations and groups without necessarily endorsing the views expressed at those events. It is therefore unfair and misleading to suggest otherwise.
The growing hostility directed towards the First Lady, Dr Fatima Maada Bio, appears to have less to do with the issue itself and more to do with politics. There seems to be a determined effort by certain political interests to undermine her credibility and diminish her growing influence both at home and abroad. However, those efforts have largely failed because her work and advocacy continue to resonate with many people across Sierra Leone and beyond.
Dr Fatima Maada Bio has consistently demonstrated pride in her African heritage and cultural identity. At the same time, she has never advocated for the forced circumcision of children or any practice imposed on minors. Like many people, she believes that adults are capable of making informed decisions regarding their own lives and personal choices. Unfortunately, in today’s political environment, even the most sensitive social issues are often transformed into tools for political confrontation.
What is remarkable is that despite not having formally declared any intention to seek future political office, discussions about her potential leadership continue to dominate public discourse. This alone speaks volumes about the influence she has built and the attention she commands within the national political landscape.
There is also a growing perception among her supporters that some individuals within influential circles are uncomfortable with her popularity and the recognition she continues to receive internationally. As a result, attempts are frequently made to question her motives, discredit her achievements, and create unnecessary controversies around her work. Yet these efforts have done little to diminish the admiration and support she enjoys from many Sierra Leoneans.
At a time when the nation faces significant challenges, Sierra Leone would benefit more from constructive engagement, respectful debate, and genuine efforts to address issues affecting the lives of ordinary citizens. Personal attacks, political rivalries, and campaigns driven by resentment serve only to distract from the important work of national development.
To those who continue to criticise the First Lady, everyone has the right to express their views. However, disagreement should be rooted in facts, fairness, and mutual respect rather than personal hostility or political ambition.
Supporters of Dr Fatima Maada Bio remain confident in her leadership qualities, her vision for the future, and her commitment to the people of Sierra Leone. They believe that no amount of political pressure or coordinated criticism can overshadow the impact she has made or the confidence many continue to place in her.
Long live Dr Fatima Maada Bio, and long live the Republic of Sierra Leone.
