International Day of Democracy : Sierra Leoneans complain to U.S. Embassy

Democracy puts government in the hands of the people. Whether by voting, peacefully protesting, or exposing government corruption in the press, citizens take charge of their government and are free to criticize their leaders without fear of punishment. #DayOfDemocracy

Jerome Alpha Kamara

That’s the greatest fear we’re into as a nation, Sierra Leone democracy is at the brink of collapse with this government!

Hadi Bah

Jerome Alpha Kamara All Sierra Leonean governments are intolerant of freedom of assembly and expression. But this government takes the cake for intolerance to freedom of speech and assembly. Irony is that most of the individuals in the government lived and worked abroad where they enjoyed the rights they are now denying Sierra Leone.

Sahr Mokuwah

THEY BROUGHT DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA IN ORDER TO REMOVED COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT, BUT THEY’RE THE SAME PEOPLE DESTROYING DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA BY SUPPORTING THE WRONG LEADERS DUE TO THEIR OWN SELF-INTEREST OR REGIME CHANGE BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SEEING EYE TO EYE WITH THE LEADERS WHO ARE DOING WELL BUT BECAUSE THEY’RE LOOSING THEIR FRIENDSHIP DUE TO CHINA OR RUSSIA INFLUENCE, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE DOING WELL FOR THEIR PEOPLE THEY WILL STILL CHANGE THEM, IN THE CASE OF UGANDA PRESIDENT, THEY KNOW HE IS DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD FOR MAJORITY OVERTHIRTYYEARS IN POWER, BUT BECAUSE OF SELF-INTEREST THEY WILL SUPPORT HIM WITHOUT REGIME CHANGE. IT’S TOO SAD FOR US IN AFRICA.

Abdul Tejan Kargbo

Citizens are free to criticize their leaders without fear of punishment, peacefully protesting, expose government corruption in the press? Such democracy does not exist in Sierra Leone.

Sannah B Samura

In Sierra Leone we don’t enjoy all of these. Our leaders should know that it’s our constitutional rights to exercise freedom of speech, peaceful protest, right to vote etc but all they know is to bastardise the Constitution. God will surely take happiness from those that are destroying our Mama Salone 🙏🙏

Jalloh Januzaj Lamin

Without a free press, democracy cannot survive. Without freedom of expression, there is no freedom.
  • Andrew Sesay

Sierra Leone is a case study where people are not allowed to criticize bad governance.
    May God help Sierra Leone.
But All this is not practiced in Mama Sierra Leone.  why our leaders doing this… No criticism or protests or saying things that would be shame to Corrupt politicians .

    Ibrahim B Kamara

But in Sierra Leone all these things the US Embassy highlighted are not existing in our country.

    ish Kelfallah

Try this in Sierra Leone, the government will instruct the police to shoot you point blank with live rounds.

    Daniel Christian Fofanah

We don’t have democracy in Sierra Leone

    Ahmed Mansaray

Hope our leaders(Sierra Leonean) are seeing this caption, and I wonder how they feel reading this!!

    Ishaaka Bangura

Not in sierra leone. Our brand of democracy is different.
    • Kargbo Morlai

Kamarainba is languishing in prison were is democracy
The opposite of democracy is manifesting itself in the clothes of democracy in Sierra Leone. Here everyone is afraid to criticize government of the day because you will be arrested and detained without knowing the crime committed.

      Samuel Koroma

      U. S   need to take action against our  Government.

      Sally Bah

No democracy in sierra Leone.  sad country

Without a free press, democracy cannot survive. Without freedom of expression, there is no freedom.

      Amb Wilfred Leeroy Kabs-kanu

Happy International Day of Democracy to the U.S, the greatest and the freest nation in the world. We , the citizens of Sierra Leone, look on the U.S . as moral guarantors of democracy, human rights, Rule of Law, constitutional governance , peace and stability in the world and in our country. We appreciate the efforts America has made to promote these values around the world. We however enjoin the U.S. to take a more proactive stand in Sierra Leone, where they themselves are witnesses to the truth that democracy is being seriously bastardized by the government of President Maada Bio. There is no democracy in Sierra Leone. No freedom of speech and the press; no freedom of assembly ( You witnessed how many innocent youths were slain recently by government security forces for demonstrating against high cost of living and corruption). You are aware that opposition politician Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray is slowly dying in prison where he has spent three years in incarceration for a bailable offence. You are aware of the bogus voter registration process going on presently, designed to rig the forthcoming elections. We sincerely hope the U.S. Government will be more proactive than it presently is to stop our country from slipping back into chaos.
