Police LUC Central division also confirms the number of casualties.

Government officials including the Minister of Lands Dr. Dennis Sandy and the head of the National Public Procurement Authority NPPA have entered the prison compound.

Meanwhile, there was a fracas at the gate as some of Sandy’s security guards were not allowed to enter. It’s not exactly clear why they are visiting as security officials are trying to calm the situation down.

According to one of the prison officers, there was indeed an attempted prison break at the Pademba prison center. In the process, one of the officers – a plumber; known as Hassan Kamara , was beaten or stabbed to death before an intervention by the few armed police officers present at that time. In their effort to escape, they set ablaze a workshop used for shoe making and training purposes.
However, according to the information minister , there were no escapes and that everything has now been put under control.

However , COCORIOKO  reporters said that Freetown was thrown into a tailspin when the news broke out and a huge volume of smoke emanating from the prison compound was seen billowing into the sky.
