Philadelphia City Council honors Councillor Abioseh Wilson in glorious citation in the U.S

Twice-elected popular female Councillor of the Freetown City Council, Abioseh Agnes Wilson, has been honoured and recognised by the City of Philadelphia in the United States of America because of her Worthy Services to Freetown.

In a citation signed by Darrell L. Clarke, the President of the Philadelphia City Council and endorsed by Mayor Jim Kenney, through the Mayor’s Commission for African, Carribean Immigrant Affairs, Madam Abioseh Wilson was granted a colourful celebration in the evening of Tuesday 13th December 2022.

The ceremony was held at the beautiful and imposing City Hall of Philadelphia. The pictures and Video of the Honouring event are now available over social media.

The lengthy Citation itself was read out in turns by senior officials of the City.

According to one of Philadelphia’s statesmen, Honourable Stanley Straughter, the City of Philadelphia was formally informed about the work of Councillor Abioseh Agnes Wilson by famous Sierra Leone female politician Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden.

Hon. Stanley Straughter said that based on the strong and abiding respect that the officials of the Mayor’s Commission have for Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, her recommendation of Councillor Abioseh Wilson received great and diligent attention which resulted in the decision to honour and recognize the eminent Madam Abioseh Wilson.

Particular reference was made to the upstanding service of Councillor Abioseh Agnes Wilson in the management of the finances of Freetown by mentioning her “diligent stewardship of resources” belonging to the people of Freetown.

The Council of the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Mayor Commission on African, Carribean Immigrant Affairs are pleased and proud to honor and recognize Councillor Agnes Abioseh Wilson and congratulate her on her election to the City Council of Freetown, Sierra Leone.

WHEREAS Twice-elected Councillor Agnes Abioseh Wilson who represents Brookfields Ward 433 in Freetownā€™s Constituency 126 is popularly known as ā€˜Mama Neeā€™ as a mark of her motherly characteristics which makes her one of the most popular elected Councillors of the Freetown City Council; A born leader, she is always surrounded by scores of volunteers in her local Ward area and;

WHEREAS Many of the Brookfields residents easily assert that Councillor Abioseh has a natural love for public service and helping people. They say she is always encouraging residents to partake in matters of national interest whilst on the local front, she is a proven humanitarian towards the needy in her Ward. For example, during the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic and earlier during the Ebola Virus outbreak, she took over the nutritious feeding of vulnerable children in her Ward; raising funds for their feeding and personally supervising the process to ensure the children received good service. She is also a Gender Rights Activist who works to provide assistance to battered wives and domestic abuse victims and;

WHEREAS Talking about developments in her constituency, many residents have praised Councillor Wilson furthering that she has collaborated with many Development Partners over the years to undertake several projects in her ward.
Brookfields residents cited her efforts to ensure the reconstruction of the key Sankey Street Bridge which links the main Market to greater parts of Brookfields. The Bridge had almost collapsed and closed to vehicular traffic because it was in a very bad condition acting as a ‘death trap’ in the community and posing to be a risky disaster waiting to happen. However, with timely intervention of Councillor Abioseh, she was able to facilitate reconstruction of the Bridge which is now okay and being used by pedestrians as well as vehicles and;

WHEREAS Residents further explained that Councillor Abioseh facilitated the construction and reconstruction of additional classrooms at the Fattah Rahman Municipal School in her Ward which had fallen into a very deplorable condition. Another School that has benefitted from the hard work of the elected Councillor is the EB Williams Municipal School which was also reconstructed through facilitation by Councillor Abioseh Wilson. Both the above two schools plus a third school, the S.M. Broderick School, also benefitted from the Councillor securing and distributing benches and desks for the needy boys and girls and;

WHEREAS In the area of potable drinking water, she has ensured the construction of a major Water Catchment and Storage Tank alongside 10,000 litre water tanks each at various locations for residents in her Ward including at Bath Street-1, Bath Street-2, Willoughby Lane, Cantonment Road and Hillcot Road which supply clean water through Pipes and Taps and;

WHEREAS In the areas of her work at the City Hall itself, as a trained Finance Professional, Councillor Wilson has efficiently served as the Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee of the Freetown City Council during which she had direct oversight for the entire Budget of the capital city of Sierra Leone. In such capacity, she scrutinized Monthly Expenditure, Returns, Tenders, Quarterly Reports and based on her Findings, she made Fiscal Recommendations to Council for appropriate actions concerning the entire City of Freetown. Her duties also included to review sectoral budgets and recommend to the committee responsible for finance for consideration and integration into budget whilst also monitoring and constantly reviewing performance of respective sectors and their responsibilities. The Councillor has also served as the Council representative for oversight of all procurements for the City of Freetown.

THEREFORE by virtue of this Citation, the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Mayor Commission on African, Carribean Immigrant Affairs are pleased and proud to honor and recognize Councillor Agnes Abioseh Wilson for her diligent stewardship of resources and contributions to Freetown, Sierra Leone. We in this Council extend the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body. Congratulations!
