The appointment of Tuma Jabbie as a member of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission is routine, as all legitimate Presidents of the Sierra Leone Bar Association @leone_pr automatically serve on the Commission in accordance with Section 140(1)(d) of the Constitution of #SierraLeone.
However, what is striking about this appointment letter is the reference to the “terms and conditions of service” to be communicated in due course.
- Previous Bar Association Presidents (legitimate ones) have served on the Commission without any remuneration save sitting fees. It is not a full time job that she needs to report for. Is this merely an instance of incompetent copying and pasting generic language, or does this signal a departure from precedent? Will Tuma Jabbie now receive remuneration? If so, will other members of the Commission also be compensated beyond the sitting fees for meetings they attend?
To seek clarity on this matter, we will be submitting a request pursuant to the Right to Access Information Act 2013 (RAIA) to ascertain whether special terms are being introduced for this appointment. Sierra Leoneans deserve transparency on such issues.
