Tradition of beating effigy of Judas mercilessly on Good Friday continues in Freetown

By Kabs Kanu

A religious tradition that is not in the Bible but which Sierra Leoneans have followed for ages will be observed today as Christians commemorate the day that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us all from sin.

In many parts of the city, after morning church services. children will beat the effigies of Judas in reprisals for his betrayal of Jesus Christ..

An effigy is a roughly made model of a particular person which was specifically made to be damaged or destroyed.

It is a tradition that many people who grew up in Freetown participated in on Good Friday. Kids would be beating empty milk or juice cups and singing derisive songs against Judas while others with whips would give his effigy a good beating and later destroy or burn it.
Here are some photos of the effigy of Judas beaten in Freetown today.
