I see some people asking why President Tinubu was in Daura with heavy security. And I just shake my head at their unawareness of Nigeria’s history.
Every Nigerian President or leader has done that except one. General Murtala Ramat Muhammed was the only President/Head of State who did not do that. Because he had no heavy security, he was killed by Lt. Colonel Bukar Suka Dimka on Friday, February 13, 1976.
Dimka did not even kill General Muhammed on the spot. He injured him and ran away. As he was fleeing the scene, General Muhammed made a noise and one of his soldiers shouted, ‘Dem never die o!’.
At that, Dimka returned to finish the job.
He would not have died if there had been heavy security around General Murtala. Even after he was shot, his security could have fired back and prevented Lt. Colonel Dimka from coming back to finish the job. And if there were ambulances in the convoy, they would have given first aid to General Muhammed, the way the ambulance in President Ronald Reagan’s motorcade saved his life after John Hinckley Jr. shot him on Monday, March 30, 1981.
This is Nigeria. Our first leader was killed by Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna. Mutinous Northern soldiers killed our second leader. The third one was violently overthrown. The fourth one was murdered by Dimka. The sixth one was overthrown in a bloody coup that took the life of Brigadier Bako. The seventh leader was ousted via a palace coup. The eighth President was forced by gun-wielding soldiers to step aside. The ninth was forced to resign, reportedly at gunpoint. The tenth died in mysterious circumstances. The eleventh only stayed for eleven months and handed over.
Given this type of history, do you want President Tinubu to move about anyway?
And then you are questioning why President Tinubu went to Katsina, a border state where bandits from neighbouring countries can sneak into Nigeria and do damage, then return to their home countries?
Anybody criticising President Tinubu’s convoy in Daura for General Buhari’s burial or anywhere else is either naive or a fifth columnist scheming for something bad to happen to the President.
