The Sierra Leone Government today announced that it is in full control after yesterday’s wild night of heavy shooting in the country.
It is still not known what were the motives of the gunmen who attacked the Wilberforce military Barracks and armory and engaged the Sierra Leone Army in wild and heavy shooting throughout the night and yesterday morning , resulting even in a prison break that saw hundreds of prisoners and detainees released.
Government officials believe it was an attempt to stage a coup and it announced the arrest of several military officers. But supporters of the opposition fear that it might be a stage-managed abortive coup purposely designed to subvert the forthcoming investigations into the rigged 2023 and previous elections , which the presidential flagbearer of the All People’s Congress ( APC ), Dr. Samura Kamara , believes could lead in early elections.
The shooting spread to different towns in the outskirts of Freetown, especially Murray Town, Calabar Town and Waterloo but it since subsided .
The Government has also reduced the curfew from 6 pm – 6am to 9pm – 6am. The government statement says the curfew will remain in force indefinitely.
WRITES MAHMOUD JALLOH
Regarding the military barracks shoutouts in the Freetown capital city of Sierra Leone in the early hours of Sunday, November 26, 2023, how long do we have to wait before the names of the assailants are released? It is still unclear whether the assailants were from the military, police, or perhaps armed civilians or foreign mercenaries. It is also unclear whether the attack was a coup attempt to overthrow the government or maybe the action of a disgruntled dissident group trying to send a protest message to the government.
Adebayor will be glowing with beaming joy as he prepares for his deadly lambast like never before. The development is also a true test of President Bio’s blanket abolition of the death penalty if and when the apprehended assailants (according to the source) are charged with possible treason. We have to wait and see how events unfold in the coming days, weeks, or months.
