Today, Sierra Leone witnessed yet another heartbreaking tragedy in Rokel, where a container accident claimed the lives of innocent people. Sadly, this is not the first, second, or even third time we have seen such devastating incidents involving unsecured containers on our roads.
Far too often, drivers fail to properly secure these heavy cargo containers despite the enormous danger they pose to the public. Even more concerning, many transport companies and container owners are not being held accountable for the reckless behavior that continues to put lives at risk every single day.
This must stop.
The Government of Sierra Leone must urgently review and strengthen regulations surrounding container transportation and road safety enforcement. Any driver found operating recklessly or failing to secure cargo properly should immediately lose their license. In addition, companies repeatedly connected to negligence and deadly accidents should face suspension or revocation of their operating privileges in Sierra Leone.
Human life must always come before profit.
There should also be a mandatory specialized insurance policy for container cargo transportation; one designed not only to cover damages, but to adequately support and compensate victims and their families when these preventable tragedies occur.
Enough is enough. We cannot continue normalizing avoidable deaths caused by negligence and weak enforcement. Our people deserve safer roads, responsible transportation systems, and accountability.
My deepest condolences go out to the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace. AL KANU

This is a country that always neglects safety measures and turns a blind eye to enforcing its own laws. There is a saying: “Na this Me Kabala people then kin say – Prevention is better than cure.” Sadly, we continue to ignore such warnings, with the common attitude of “nor to me business.”
This is not the first time a heavy container truck has caused deaths, recently it happened at Lumley, yet the same tragedy keeps happening over and over again. We already have restrictions stating that heavy container trucks are not allowed to use the main streets of Freetown during the daytime until 10 PM, with specific routes assigned to them. However, these regulations are often disregarded, and the authorities responsible for enforcing them are not being proactive enough.
Today, families are crying in pain over the loss of their loved ones after a heavy container fell on innocent people, leading to deaths and leaving many others seriously injured and suffering with pain.
When will we, as a country, learn from our mistakes caused by negligence and lawlessness? My heart feels heavy as I write this, seeing people lose their lives so senselessly. It is really sad and heartbreaking for me to witness human beings dying in such painful circumstances. DAVID MANSARAY

Its sad and this has always been the case. We are not safety and security conscious as a nation. Such blatant disregard for safety standards by the police who are charged with the duty to protect lives and property. Some of these vehicles are not even road worthy, uptil now there is no vehicle emission check mechanism to be done periodically. All kine rotten beleh truck go tot heavy container wae noto even e load capacity. Worse off, them nor even dae fix the container dem safely na d truck cos altem dem dae fodom. So so alaki bo, waste of lives for things that are within our control. SLRSA nor even dae pay attention.
Yesterday’s container accident and so many others previously are things we should have curtailed by now. One would have thought that mechanisms to address these would have been in place, but the check points by the police seems to cater for bike riders.
No safety hazard reflector lights for those trucks stationed in certain areas. So so fatal accidents na d country pantap d issues dem wae people dae deal with on a daily.
May Allah help us but e mona beng.
