The donation of items worth millions of Leone and made through the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs was part of Mariatu Kargbo’s support to the recovery process following the recent flood disaster in Freetown.
John Baimba Sesay said, the decision taken by Mariatu Kargbo and her Chinese friends in China was a way of being part of the national response to the disaster especially at a trying moment like this. “However small this donation is, Mariatu and her Chinese friends in China have done this as a way of helping mitigate the challenges brought by the flood disaster”, Sesay said.
According to Sesay, this is not the first time Mariatu is doing such a philanthropic donation, saying, following the Ebola outbreak over a year ago, she made a donation of 50 million Leones to the Government and presented hundreds of machines to the Government though the Embassy in China.
Sesay commended the rapid response by the Government to the flood disaster in Freetown, assuring of Mariatu’s continued support and readiness to always stand by her country and that of the Sierra Leone Embassy in China. “I also bring the Embassy’s heartfelt concerns”, he said.
Responding, Madam Kadie Buya Kamara thanked Mariatu Kargbo and friends for the timely donation, also making reference to her philanthropic supports across the country over the years. “I also would want to register our appreciation to the Sierra Leone Embassy in China, which has been contacting through the Acting Ambassador, Kumba Alice Momoh”
Madam Buya Kamara called on Sierra Leoneans to emulate the efforts of people like Mariatu, whilst calling on people to go by what Government tells them as part of the efforts in addressing the challenges left by the flood.
