Sierra Leone : Riots erupt in Freetown and Kenema as SLPP supporters go on the rampage

The market stalls of the women of Abacha Street , Freetown , were destroyed this morning by supporters of the Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) ,  a day after the National Elections Commission ( NEC )  controversially declared them winners of the presidential run off, and their flag bearer , Brig. Maada Bio  sworn in as President.

Market women  largely supported the All People’s Congress ( APC )  during the elections.

These videos and the statements made by social media activists say it all.

Riot also broke out between SLPP  supporters on the rampage and the Police in Kenema

I strongly condemn the abrupt destruction of ECONOMIC LIVELIHOOD of lower income WOMEN last night by thugs supporting the ruling SLPP Government of President Julius Maada Bio. The destruction of market stalls and threats against those poor women who are their families' breadwinners is just sickening! And it appears to have well organised undertones. It was not a spontaneous event. If even you wanted them removed, it should never be without alternative arrangements put in place. So, I strongly condemn the abrupt destruction of market street trading stalls and threats against women breadwinners without alternative arrangements yet put in place. I hope we are not going to experience any more of such unfortunate actions. APC lost a chunk of support when similar video images appeared of WOMEN being displaced in Aberdeen in the year 2015 by the demolition squad. Don't take citizens for granted! In just less than 24 hours, we see a large chunk of WOMEN being economically distressed. It is so abrupt and so unfair!😡🌴 *SLPP supporters, una kusheh oh!!!!*Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, OOR.Thursday April 5th 2018

This is an SOS call to President Bio to address the Nation and call for calm. The amount of violence being perpetrated against APC supporters & law enforcement agencies isn’t a good start for a peaceful coexistence!!

Attacking the police in Kenema City, and the APC supporters in both Kenema City and Freetown is very uncalled for. Abacha Women are Sierra Leoneans, and Bio should protect them too. MAADA BIO must stop the madness of his ZOMBIES.

Victor Ako Mengot We have already started to see hoodlums starting to wreck havoc in the society because they believe now it is their turn to suppress ordinary people who might be within their political circle of influence. How unfortunate. Is it indeed one country one people

IN KENEMA, SLPP SUPPORTERS BURNT DOWN STALLS OF MARKET WOMEN TOO.

The livelihoods of our women is the bedrock of a better Sierra Leone! Shame on those who went on the rampage to destroy the tables of these market women!
Mr. President you must unite the country to avoid us going down emerging path! People need to understand that the moment you took the oath of office, you seized to be the SLPP Presidential Aspirant and became the Head of State of Sierra Leone!
Your Excellency we are calling on you to denounce this act of thuggery against our women! I am sure you will with the atmost urgency it requires!

The violence perpetrated now against the security forces and APC supporters will lead to political instability. Political instability not good for national development. I see a repeat of the tension created 20yrs ago and then use it as an excuse for not delivering the promises to the people. But it’s early days and I hope the PEACE that has been maintained for the past decade will continue.

Philip Ayodele Coker These are normal occurrences that are expected even if it was APC that won u would have seen these attacks which are not condone in any shape or form .
I am sure they will be tackled as I trust the new administration to get a grip of the situation .

Cecil Pratt Nope you won’t see such attack bro under APC. Remember APC won 2 election. We never attacked the security forces or business traders. It is NOT ‘normal occurrence’. In 1996 it was the same excuses and seems history repeating itself.
Grace Kargobai

Grace Kargobai The major problem here truthfully is that Sierra Leone had been divided and this is what we were saying but behold, people were too deaf to listen. Now…with the main opposition not accepting the result and all….even the security of our country is honestly not at it best right now. As I type…few minutes ago on AYV…it was shown Bio holding meeting with all the top security services…police and military included. Too much damage was already done in the country…I feel for him. Because he literally had to turn his support base to a ruthless one to be able to resist a terrible incumbent. I pray their meeting comes out fruitful and as our president…he leads firmly and instill discipline to all…be a red or green supporter.

Naasu Fofanah Grace, the elections are over so, we need to be one. No more blame games begets more blame games. The country is looking unsafe. We have to collectively denounce any act of violence with no justification at this time. Like I said we need a National conference to heal and unite. But, for now let’s denounce this barbaric acts of violence that has the possibility of bringing our hard earned democracy and peace to disrepute.
