Pictorial : The daily chaos caused in Freetown by motor bike riders

By Mohamed Asmieu Bah

These pictures show the daily chaos caused by Motor bike riders in our city.

The other day I read a piece written by Dr Mack Kapuwa, the Hospital Suprintendent at Connaught. That writeup left me in a very somber mood for days. He presented grim statistics 📊 of the lives we have lost, people who have been given permanent deformity, families that have lost bread winners and kids been made to become orphans.

As I type, one of my sisters is admitted at the Connaught Hospital, as a result of a commercial bike that hit her which led her to coma. She was standing around Yams Farm, when a commercial bike rammed in to her, broke her foot and left her unconscious.

The surgery is yet to be done because she remains unconscious for a fourth night now.

According to Dr Kapuwa”s article, deaths and injuries from road crashes especially from motor bikes are now rivaling deaths from malaria, HIV/ AIDS or tuberculosis and other diseases.

“Road traffic injuries kill at 33 deaths per 100, 000 people in 2019, a figure that is comparable to some communicable diseases that receive far greater attention. Whiles some communicable diseases are falling due to some interventions, road traffic deaths are increasing”.

This is alarming and scary. As a nation we have lost precious souls as a result of the reckless way these bike riders operate, they have no respect for road traffic signs, nor do they show responsibility when they are on the road.

Go to major intersections and see how they are obstructing traffic. That’s why I duff my hat to the Minister of Internal Affairs for his bold steps in making our city look likes a real city. He deserves support , we can’t continue like this as a nation.

You or your vehicle can be hit at any time and nothing comes out of it because the rider will flee leaving you with injury or disfigured car. Drive around rush hour and see what our police and traffic warden go through. Last year a rider hit my daughter, he attempted to run we chased him and caught him demanded for his life card which his owner brought the other day. It will shock you to know more than a year the bike owner hasn’t come for. his card but I’m sure the bike is still on the road. Let it be everybody’s concern to make our roads safer.
