The Port Loko Regional Hospital has recently witnessed a significant transformation with the full rehabilitation of its Outpatients Department (OPD), a move that has drawn praise from both residents and stakeholders. This commendable upgrade was spearheaded through the hospital’s internally generated revenue, showcasing a strong commitment to self-sustainability and prudent resource management. At the helm of this transformative effort is the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Yusuf Sheku Tejan, whose visionary leadership has been pivotal in driving positive change in the facility.

In a remarkable show of public-private partnership, Unix Pharmacy joined the initiative by donating two air-conditioners to support the revamped OPD. This collaboration not only highlights the importance of collective responsibility in healthcare development but also signals growing confidence from private entities in the hospital’s management. Such partnerships are increasingly becoming vital in improving public service delivery, especially in the health sector, where resources are often limited.
One of the most impactful components of the rehabilitation is the integration of the Government’s Solar Electrification Project, which now provides a stable 24-hour electricity supply to the OPD. This has significantly improved the facility’s operational efficiency, enhanced patient care, and ensured that services can be delivered seamlessly at all hours. For both patients and medical staff, this development marks a new era of reliability and comfort within the hospital environment.
Dr. Yusuf Sheku Tejan has been at the forefront of these advancements, and his leadership has not gone unnoticed. Speaking to Public Trust Media, he emphasized that the hospital’s new role as a referral point in the region requires it to maintain high standards in both infrastructure and service delivery. He expressed his utmost commitment to continue improving the hospital, ensuring that both the environment and the quality of care reflect the trust placed in the institution by the government and the public.
The rehabilitation of the Outpatients Department is more than just an infrastructural upgrade. It represents a renewed dedication to quality healthcare delivery in the Northwest Region. Dr. Tejan’s proactive approach, combined with support from partners and the government, has positioned Port Loko Regional Hospital as a model of progressive healthcare leadership. With continued investment and collaboration, the hospital is well on its way to becoming one of the country’s premier referral centers.
The completed rehabilitation is a consensus idea of the Hospital’s management team, including the newly posted medical officers who were roaming around without an office for patients consultation. As a result of the work put together, all Medical officer’s and community health technicians (CHT) now have their offices, and patients are now being attended to accordingly by a medical doctor while the hospital administration is working towards the renovation of a Staff on-call room. Despite this significant achievement, the hospital is calling on the intervention of stakeholders and development partners to undertake other rehabilitation services such as the hospital walkways, pavements, and roofing in the maternity wards.
