*Mayor Aki-Sawyerr Champions Health Walk In Makeni City In Collaboration With Women Of Bombali District*

“Health is Wealth” was a recurring message given at yesterday’s Health Walk in Makeni City. It was my pleasure to organise this event in collaboration with the Inter-Group Bombali Network (a coalition of over 10 women’s groups in Bombali District) and the female councillors of Makeni City Council and Bombali District Council.

The Health Walk attracted over 1,200 women and youth (including UniMak students) who walked, jogged and danced from NP Fuel Station to Wusum Field. I was delighted to be joined by my host the Mayor of Makeni, His Worship Abubakar Kamara (aka Mayor Lamtales), the Bombali District Council Chairman Dr Mohamed Sisay and the Koinadugu District Council Chairman Lawrence Teteh Kargbo. The APC Bombali District Chairman Hon Martin Bangura, the Deputy District Chairman Ali (General) Kargbo and senior Makeni stakeholder Hon Ambassador Alimamy Kamara were not only present but were very active participants!

The hour long walk culminated in an educative session at the Wusum Field chaired by Dr Patricia Jitta Abdulai of UniMak. Messages covered the need for regular exercise and the importance of reducing salt and bouillon cube intake to reduce the risk of hypertension. Similarly messages were given about reducing the risk of contracting diabetes through reducing sugar intake. Kush is a major killer of our youth and successive speakers called on the government to do more to stop the supply of this and other illegal drugs that appear to be in free circulation in our country.

My special thanks are extended to Cynthia Conteh, CEO of the Inter-Group Bombali Network and her entire team and to Cllr Suard Koroma and the other female councillors for their amazing support and coordination of the Health Walk.

Yesterday’s walk demonstrated excellent collaboration between women in the interest of Sierra Leone’s development. Development of our nation requires a healthy population.
