Jos Leijdekkers alias ‘Bolle Jos’, ‘Josje Breda’ or ‘El Presidente’, grew into one of the largest drug barons in Europe in a few years. In the meantime, he also has decades of prison sentences open, for multiple convictions in Belgian and Dutch drug cases.

The longest sentence was imposed in our country – 24 years in prison – for multiple coke transports, an armed robbery and giving a liquidation order. In addition, the judge recently decided that he must transfer almost 100 million euros in criminal money to the Dutch State. There is only one problem: Jos is still a free man.

When Leijdekkers came into the picture with the investigating services, he had long since left the Netherlands. In the period after that he was in Turkey and possibly also in Dubai or Russia for a while. And although he was arrested in Turkey, he still managed to escape – probably through bribery.

But where to? That suddenly became clear when images of the 33-year-old Brabanter appeared on social media. Jos was in Sierra Leone, where he had attended a church service with the country’s president. More videos by Leijdekkers followed shortly afterwards. And more information about the life he would lead in the West African country for a year and a half to two.

For example, he would be good friends with the president of Sierra Leone, have a relationship with his daughter and even have a child with her, according to the many rumors. He also allegedly had several senior government officials in his pocket and continued his drug empire in Africa. With the help of the government.

Officially, Sierra Leone said it was not aware of Jos’ identity – the Brabanter would have pretended to be a Norwegian-Turkish businessman. There would also be a manhunt for the ‘most wanted man’ in the meantime. However, there are serious doubts about the seriousness of the manhunt, since according to the stories, Leijdekkers would sprinkle millions to keep those in power in the country on his side.

Power

But how much power does ‘Bolle Jos’ have today in Sierra Leone? In an interview with John van den Heuvel, a local journalist opens a booklet about the Dutch. This Kandeh Sesay has been writing about Jos for a long time, but has since fled the country. From America he continues his work.

In conversation with Van den Heuvel, Sesay states that journalists have been approached in Sierra Leone to stop writing about the Dutch. In addition, a lot of money would have been offered. Thousands of dollars in fact. If they refused this, they would be cleared out of the way, they were told, according to Sesay.

“Leijdekkers had penetrated into all public sectors”, the journalist continues. “From the president’s family down. If you go to the ports, he is the man in command. If you go to the immigration service, he is the man in command. If you go to drug enforcement, he’s the man in command. He is very powerful throughout the country.”

Kandeh says she will not be able to return to Sierra Leone for the time being. According to him, “the cartel” is too big and too powerful. “You can be kidnapped, tortured or killed,” he says. “Or they will do everything to make you suspicious and throw you in jail.”

No extradition treaty

The tricky thing is that the Netherlands does not have an extradition treaty with Sierra Leone. There would be contact behind the scenes between the Netherlands and the government of the West African country, but given the corruption, it is only questionable whether that will yield anything. Especially because, according to several sources, Jos is now even part of the presidential family
