Sierra Leone Lawyers’ Society concerned about matters involving Hawa Hunt and the Dutch Journalist in Sierra Leone

LAWYERS ‘ SOCIETY OF SIERRA LEONE

The Lawyers’ Society is monitoring the case by the State against Hawa Hunt “the reality TV star” for alleged cyber-related offences.

While we would like to respect the ongoing criminal proceedings and await the decision of the court, we however would like to urge the state authorities involved to reconsider dropping all charges against Hawa Hunt especially when media reports of the proceedings seem to suggest that there has been no factual-complainant-witness apart from formal witnesses of the prosecution.

The continuing prosecution of Hawa Hunt with onerous (unmet) bail conditions while very serious crimes are being reportedly committed in our country, not least, the proliferation of narcotic drugs by persons known or ought to be known by the government, seems to suggest that her case is really not about fighting crime.

The Lawyers’ Society would like to reiterate that the margin of accommodation of criticism and even insults in a democracy by leaders or state figures should and ought to be greater for fundamental rights of individuals to be protected and enjoyed!

THE SOCIETY’S BOSS, LAWYER SORIE SENGBE MARRAH SAID THIS ABOUT THE ARREST OF THE DUTCH JOURNALIST
