*Sierra Leoneans!! Where* *has our national* *pride gone to?*
Friday, February 7, 2025. The photos above show the gutter at the beginning of Soldier Street that opens at State Avenue, about twenty yards to the first security post heading into State House, the main office of the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, where nearly all important official engagements take place, including diplomats handing over their diplomatic credentials to the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Retired Brigadier Maada Bio.
The blue gate in the photo across the street is the side gate for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Freetown.
On the right of the photo where there are three women and a man with light blue shirt sitting on a long bench is a ‘cookery shop’ – with people eating in the open air, and their dirty plates being washed and red palm oil oily water being splattered on the road leading to State House.
Over the past 47 years of my post-university life traveling to other West African capital cities like Abuja, Dakar, Accra, even major cities like Lagos, Enugu, Calabar in Nigeria, Abidjan in Ivory Coast…it would be unthinkable to see such nauseous filth almost inside the official residence of a President and Head-of-State. Why is it happening in Freetown?
I have written often; and I have said on television and radio, there is need for some form of collective therapy for Sierra Leoneans – especially when such palpable lack of pride for one’s capital city and vomit-inducing filth is juxtaposed with the ferocity of our politics.
I point these things out to prick our collective consciences.
