Bambay Lans Kamara, K.L.:
With due appreciation for your patience, as I promised you separately in the past few days, I will now proceed to answer your substantially identical questions.
Any attempt to answer the question of how to rid Sierra Leoneans of the self-destructive, self-denigrating malaise that I have referred to as Colonial Mentality must start by addressing a key question, namely:
Why does the average Sierra Leonean reflexively fawn upon anyone and all things foreign, while uniformly denigrating anyone and all things African?
In order to answer that question, we need to go back to a time in SL’s history when the traditions of our ancestors were first usurped by the invasion of Africa by European slave traders and colonialists. Prior to that unprovoked aggression by foreigners, Africa thrived as the home of many citadels of higher learning and commerce, such as the world-famous metropolis, Timbuktu. Africa also boasted advanced nation states like the ancient empires of Mali, Songhai, and Ghana. Those African citizens lived in well-defined communities that were naturally segregated by tribal groups. Significantly, they largely co-existed peacefully along the natural boundaries formed by the different tribal groupings.
All that changed about 500 years ago when opportunistic Europeans, crazed by their immoral thirst for overnight riches, cynically targeted Africa, and Africans, for the largest pillage and plunder in the history of mankind — the Atlantic slave trade and its no less immoral successor, European colonialism. The latter continues even today in all but name in the uniquely African affliction that we know as Colonial Mentality.
In the process, the invading Westerners also sustained their secondary goal of establishing the Western way of life as the preeminent culture in Africa, and among all Africans — the better to perpetuate their hegemony over Africa.
At the outset, the leaders of the Western countries knew that the proud Africans with the self-esteem that came from exercising longstanding control over their own affairs would not be easy push-overs in their naked grab for Africa’s wealth. So, purely to reduce the risk to their own lives, not to mention their interest in looting Africa and remain alive to enjoy their ill-begotten spoils, the early European invaders devised an insidious — and devastating successful — strategy. Instead of continuing to fight the brave Africans with guns and other lethal weapons, and thereby risk injury and death to themselves, they reasoned to themselves: Why not cut the risk, and the cost, of their pillage and plunder of our continent by getting the Africans to voluntarily surrender their wealth, both material and human, to the Europeans?
Of course, the problem for the European invaders was finding a way to fool the Africans into dropping their guard against their evil designs upon the Africans’ vast wealth. Anyone who has been faced with the task of designing a marketing campaign — whether of a product, such as bath soap, or, equivalently here in the USA, a political candidate, would recognize the challenge that faced the early European plunderers and pillagers in Africa. As history attests, the Europeans settled on a two-pronged attack against Africans:
On the one hand, they devised what the late, great Nigerian musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, described, hundreds of years later, in his 1980s song entitled, “SHUFFERING AND SHMILING,” as the “Suffer [nar] dis world; Enjoy [nar] heaven!” principle. In a word: Religion, European-style!
As Fela put it, in an expanded indictment of the corruption by European and other intermediaries of not one, but two, of the original great Middle-Eastern religions, Christianity and Islam:
“Suffer, suffer, [nar] dis world
Enjoy [nar] heaven!
My people dem dae go follow Bishop
Dem go follow Pope
Dem go follow Imam
Dem go nar London
Dem go nar Rome
Dem go nar Mecca
Dem go take all di [dollars]”
And so, it was, that European colonialists deliberately misused religion to first disarm Africans, and then proceed to massively enrich themselves at the harrowing expense of Africans. Specifically, the Africans were fooled into thinking that their salvation lay only in heaven, and not at all here on earth, where they should be content to suffer stoically in poverty and disease, if necessary, in order to reap their waiting reward –in heaven! The cruelest irony of all in this catastrophic hoodwinking of an entire continent by cynical, opportunistic foreigners is that, before the latter’s arrival to sow poverty, disease, and other ills in Africa, our people were doing just fine, thank you! As the musically gifted Fela put it in another of his masterpieces, “COFFIN FOR HEAD OF STATE:”
“It s a well-known fact that for many thousands of years
We Africans had our own traditions
These [dollar]-making organizations
Come put we Africans in total confusion
Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord
By the grace of Almighty Lord
Allahu Akbar, Muhammadu Salaam Alaikum, Allah”
In case you are wondering why those early African victims of European colonialist propaganda did not ask their oppressors the simple question: Why can’t we enjoy here on earth AND also in heaven?, the answer to your question would lead you directly to the second prong used to disarm our ancestors (and even many among us today), so that the Westerners can massively enrich itself by stealing Africa’s resources. That ploy is one which is very familiar to those Africans, including Fela, who have seen through it. It is notorious as Colonial Mentality — the successful brainwashing of far too many gullible Africans into believing in the inherent superiority of any and all things foreign, over any and all things African. It is through Colonial Mentality that the European and other Western pillagers of Africa succeeded — and continue to succeed — in their 500-year old robbery of Africa of both its people and its resources.
In order to efficiently pull wool over the collective faces of hundreds of millions of Africa, while they stole our continent and its people blind, the marauding Europeans knew that they had to achieve the least costly form of slavery — mental slavery (the enslavement of a person’s mind). In other words, the Western invaders had to make Africans voluntarily believe that their salvation lay solely through the thoughts, words, and actions of Europeans and other Westerners. However, the proud African tradition stood in the way of any such large-scale brainwashing of Africans. So, again, the immoral Western invaders devised a simple — and devastatingly successful — strategy to complement their earlier described corrupted, quasi-religious ploy, namely: Erase all vestiges of Africa’s proud heritage by literally destroying any and every facet of the proud African culture.
As history again attests, the execution of the second Western plot against hundreds of millions of innocent Africans produced first, the Atlantic slave trade and then, in its wake, the no less immoral arbitrary partition and concurrent colonization of Africa. Together, both acts have now produced the mind set, among far too many Africans, that our salvation lies only through Westerners and Western ideas and actions.
That, then, is how Africans, in general, and Sierra Leoneans, in particular, came to be afflicted with the particular problem of low self-esteem that we now know as Colonial Mentality, a term that I borrowed in 2001 from Fela, as used in his wickedly revolutionary song from the 1980s, “COLONIAL MENTALITY.” Keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with an African admiring Western values. What is very wrong is when Africans cross the line beyond admiration of Western values to a total and reflexive denigration of all things African in favor of any and all things Western for no other reason than the racial origin of the respectitive items. This distinction is claried in greater detail in my almost 5-year old Leonenet posting that can be accessed via the link below.
I hope that, in my thoughts expressed above, I have addressed the first part of K.L.’s s question — “If Sierra Leoneans, according to you, lack self-esteem, what is/are the root/s cause …” In Part 2 of this posting, which I hope to find time to send in the next few days, I will address Bambay Lans Kamara’s question, which is similar to the residual party of K.L.’s following question: “how, where, when and how do we go about solving this problem?”

Mom,
Understanding that colonial mentality was acquired by social engineering through methods of political, economic, and cultural conditioning over the years,I believe is the first true step towards our MENTAL LIBERATION
Undoubtedly, reading books by Walter Rodney,Edward Said,Claude Ake,and Franz Fannon; or listening to music by Fela,Marley,Tosh,Hills and Salia is essential towards our unlearning of what is wrong with us, and the relearning of what is right for us.
However,in the end, it comes down to how inividuals generally percieve themselves and the choices they make in conducting their affairs in society.

Indians, in my opinion, appear to be less affected by the negative impact of colonialism than Africans are. Among African countries there also seem to be some variation in the extent to which individual countries are affected by this mentality. I wonder what other factors could account for these apparent differences.

Both your observations, I believe, are accurate. As Guma correctly stated yesterday, “However,in the end, it comes down to how inividuals generally percieve themselves and the choices they make in conducting their affairs in society.”
Therefore, the level of Colonial Mentality varies from country to country based on the differences among individuals in those countries. Which, of course, begs the question: Why is the average S/Leonean affected worse than others?
Abstracting from individual reasons, I believe that the divide-and-rule policy of the British colonialists, exacerbated by their purely selfish bias in favor of our Krio ancestors, largely explains the elevated Colonial Mentality in SL. That cynical British ploy succeeded in making other tribes in SL believe that their own salvation (British favor) lay in becoming like the favored Krios.
The problem, of course, was that a disproportionate part of Krio culture was derived from that of their erthswhile slave masters — Westerners. Thus, by deliberate design, the British entrenched in the average S/Leonean an in-built tendency to emulate Western culture. Significantly, this was not replicated in any of the other societies invaded and colonized by Britain.
Therefore, those other ex-colonies, such as India, and even Nigeria, a fellow African country, escaped the weighty burden that the British cynically imposed upon our country — an almost slavish adulation of Western culture concurrent with a uniform disdain for African traditions. In short: Colonial Mentality.
I hope the above explanation is helpful in understanding why S/Leoneans are affected by Colonial Mentality worse than any other citizens of the former so-called British empire.

K.L.:
Every one of the songs you mentioned, save “Lunch time,” were among the large number of my favorite songs, while I was a teen-aged student at Fourah Bay College during the late 1970s. Indeed, as Kabs and other FBC alumni from that time should remember, I regularly played them from my podium at FBC’s Solomon Caulker Hall’s dining room, beaming Africa’s rich music to the rest of the lunching/dining students in Bai Bureh Hall, and my own native Davidson Nicol Hall.
As you can imagine, I still listen to every one of those African masterpieces practically every day. So, in a way, I am still enjoying the “good old days of Freetown” which you mentioned, right here in far away Maryland, USA!

I am not an authority on this but I doubt whether the Bible says that Adam and Eve were the ONLY people God created. Don’t forget that Cain fled from Eden to Nod after killing his brother. It was after he fled to Nod that the Bible says he built a city. Since there is no evidence to show that he fled with someone else, it is highly probable (though not certain) that he met his wife out of Eden.

A Christmas Wish for Sierra Leone
By Mohamed A. Jalloh, Maryland, USA. December 25, 2005
It is self-evident that unless and until Sierra Leoneans learn to believe in themselves, instead of foreigners, as Sierra Leone’s saviors, our country will continue to be a paradise for foreigners — but not for Sierra Leoneans.
Therefore, on this Christmas Day, my wish for Sierra Leone is a simple prayer, namely :
MAY SELF-ESTEEM take root in each and every Sierra Leonean so that they would no longer feel the need to pull down their compatriots in order to drag Sierra Leone down to a level of under-achievers, but uplift themselves so that our entire country’s level of achievement would be raised for the benefit of us all!
Sincerely,
Moh’m

Many of us have shied away from pointing out the negative aspects of UNAMSIL’s 5-year presence in Sierra Leone.
1.There is a clear link between the substantial increase in prostitution and the deployment of UNAMSIL
2. There is now close to 5, 000 illegimate children fathered by people who were suppose to protect the most vulnerable in conflicts. Who is going to look after these fatherless children?
3. Created a culture of dependency
4. Helped nurture the most arrogant and corrupt government in the history of Sierra Leone
And there are many more.
The pluses outweigh the minuses but these have been overplayed to the neglect of the unsavoury aspects of the deployment of 17,000 troops in a tiny nation such as ours.
The impact of UNAMSIL’s presence in Sierra Leone must now be looked at dispassionately for the sake of posterity.

” 4. Helped nurture the most arrogant and corrupt government in the history of Sierra Leone.”
Is this a wicked and unsubstantiated rumour of a fact?
