The protests demanded by the People’s Power in Politics ( PPP ) took off today with shops and many schools in the capital, Freetown closed and the main streets empty , with traffic minimal, and pockets of protests in some locations of the city and other parts of the country.
Though not as big as anticipated by the organizers, demonstrations were seen in Port Loko, Kambia and parts of Freetown, with protesters chanting : “MAADA MUST GO. WE ARE TIRED. “
The business district of Sierra Leone looked like a ghost town early in the morning , with shops closed, street traders and public transportation drivers, including bikers staying away. Few school children seen on the streets , though the government provided buses to take pupils to school, in anticipation of refusals by poda poda, taxi, bus and okada drivers to show up.
In some parts of the city, business appeared to be going on as normal but shops and street traders and commercial vehicle drivers were not available . What had however become obvious was that Adebayor had successfully shut down the country again.
Throughout the day, security had to deal with sporadic protests .
At Port Loko, there was a spectacle as a disabled man in a wheel chair was one of those leading the protesters, chanting : MAADA MUST GO.
