Widespread condemnation of murder of police officer in Makeni, as steaming conspiracy theories begin to emerge

VICKIE REMOE

Extremely distressing news from Makeni is that Assistant Superintendent Matthew Gbanya was murdered yesterday.

First time I’ve heard of a police officer being targeted and killed in Sierra Leone. This should not be. It is reprehensible!

Di man im body no col yet people have already started to justify the unjustifiable with “na im bin pul tear gas pan Samura” and “na dem bin kill Evangelist Samson”. This narrative is shameful and unconscionable!

Regardless of where your political allegiance lay, during this Ramadan, on this Easter weekend, I beg you to fear God and condemn this. Senseless violence and killing, no ok tiday, e no ok tumara!

No to because e wear uniform mean say ASP Gbanya no to mortal man lek you. His wife has been made a widow overnight. A little girl and a boy have lost their father. A mother has lost a son.

As the police seek to investigate this killing, I hope they do so according to the law. They must seek out those responsible and bring them to Justice but we don’t want citizens in Makeni to live in fear of the police that their sons will be killed in cold bold in retaliation. We want peace in Makeni.

We want the person or persons responsible for taking his life to be brought in front of a court of law so that they may be tried. We want Justice for ASP Gbanya.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of ASP Gbanya. May Allah forgive his sins and may his soul rest in peace.

CHRDI CONDEMN ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST LAW ENFORCEMENT

CHRDI strongly condemns the alleged killing of police officer in Makeni City on April 8, 2023.
In Sierra Leone, there have been multiple incidents of violence and killings of law enforcement and citizens by police officers, some political activists, and the citizens themselves.

These incidents have their roots in lawlessness and disorderly behaviour, and there is widespread impunity for those who commit these acts of violence and murder.

We are gravely concerned that lawlessness has considerably increased over the past few years, particularly among political activists and some state actors who persist in spreading hate speech in our society today, resulting in tragedies such as this one.

Many individuals, including police officers and community members, have suffered the damage caused by the abuse of public power and human rights violations, as shown in the cases of August 10, 2022, incident and the April 8, 2023, incident.

We call for the realisation of a society where all Sierra Leoneans can live in dignity and without tribal discrimination, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We implore the government of Sierra Leone and other nations to step up their efforts to advance and defend human rights.

wanted to remind citizens that police officers run towards danger for the sake of public safety “every single day, on every shift,” and encouraged people to thank officers for their service.

Nothing justifies the targeting and murdering of law enforcement. Whether on regularly scheduled patrol duty or answering an emergent call for help, law enforcement officers put on their uniforms every day with no guarantee they will return home safely.

They swear an oath to protect and defend their communities, and they do so with pride. Our law enforcement officers deserve nothing less than our full support.

We call for a fully transparent and speedy investigation of the killing of this officer and the possible prosecution of another killing of citizens and law enforcement officers.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones who are mourning the loss of the police officer.

Note: Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI ) is a Rights based Public social-policy advocacy Organisation. We Draw attention to the responsibility of duty-bearers to uphold human rights, and seek to support rights-holders to claim their rights. CHRDI is in Special Consultative Status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and accredited to many UN Agencies.

Fatima Accused: Police Officer Shot to Death Named in Assassination of Evangelist Samson

By Abu Shaw in London (10/04/2023)

Sierra Leone under the failed President Julius Maada Bio has become very unstable, insecure, and life-threatening for the people of Sierra Leone.

It is even more frightening when the very security of the nation is being undermined by the SLPP government officials themselves. Clearly, the perpetrators of the extra-judicial killings in the country are coming from those in power. So many innocent Sierra Leoneans have lost their precious lives for no justifiable reason. Some of the victims have met their deaths because of being fierce critics of President Bio’s failed regime and other victims have been killed because they have top secrets about the Bios which the SLPP regime does not want to be exposed. So they are eliminated in execution style. (Photo: Police Officer Mathew Banya and Fatima Jabbe Bio).

The latest victim of the shooting is the OSD Police Regional Commander in Maknei Mathew Banya alias Boyka whose sudden death in Makeni northern Sierra Leone over the weekend has sent shock waves in and outside Sierra Leone. Information reaching the Organiser newspaper says OSD Boyka was eliminated by Insiders i.e. top SLPP government officials who are aware of his death in Makeni on Saturday, April 8, 2023. OSD Boyka’s death by shooting was posted online minutes after his demise as social media activists and bloggers continue to discuss the death of OSD Boyka. Blames for those responsible for the sniper shooting started hitting the newsstand.

Also, reports have confirmed that the late policeman Bokya is known for his direct involvement in the assassination of the APC social media activist Evangelist Samson, the real name Mr Hassan Dumbuya who was assassinated on August 14, 2022, by state security officers attached to the Bio presidency. Is the shooting to death of OSD Boyka linked to his involvement in the murder of Evangelist Samson? Or did the late policeman know who the mastermind was regarding the assassination of Evangelist Samson? Or is the Bio presidency directly involved in his death? Is Fatima Jabbe Bio responsible? It remains to be seen. (Photo: Late Police Officer Mathew Banya aka Bokya was shot to death in a vehicle by a snipper).

Accusing fingers are pointing at Fatima Bio directly. Now, the brutal SLPP regime has imposed a sudden curfew order in Makeni primarily to disrupt the free flow of the issuance of Voter Identification Cards which started on April 7, 2023, and is expected to end on April 16. President Bio is so desperate for the June 24, 2023 elections that his failed regime would do anything to stop people in the north and northwest from getting their precious Voter ID Cards. Who knows, perhaps that is one of the reasons why they killed the OSD Boyka so as to have a plausible reason to impose a curfew in Makeni, the stronghold of the main opposition APC party. The SLPP regime did the same at Abacha Street in Freetown where police disrupted the market women from receiving their Voter Ids.

The Brain at Work reports thus – North-East Police Spokesman Sgt John ABASS has just confirmed the shooting of the death of OSD coordinator Boyka in Makeni by an unknown assailant. Details about the incident remain unclear. Panic has engulfed the city’s central business district with people running from nowhere to everywhere. The OSD coordinator for Northeast region Asp. MATHEW MOIWAH BANYA commonly known as “BOIKA”  was shot dead at around 10:00 am, between Station Road now called (Dr. Vacent Kanu Road) and Teko Road axis. The people of Makeni were running helter-skelter at this time of the night for safety. The cause of his death is unclear. @ The Brain at Work.

Many Sierra Leoneans are delighted over the death of OSD Boyka. Fatima Bio knows that after June 24, 2023, her government will not be re-elected and the killers in the SLPP regime will go down and face the ICC in the future. So anybody who has any secrets against Fatima and Maada Bio will be killed before the elections. And OSD Boyka is just one of the victims of Fatima and Maada Bio. Latest reports ECSL officials are not distributing the Cards in Makeni and other northern towns, the strongholds of the APC party. Social media activists based in Gambia Salone Borbor advised the APC party to inform the international community about the cheating going on within the ECSL on the instructions of President Bio.
