Widespread condemnation of President Bio as reckless death threats polarize Sierra Leone

🇸🇱 😨 😳 😨 🇸🇱
The President is the “Symbol of National Unity” according to Section 40(2) of our Constitution. Therefore, reprehensible and divisive words against APC supporters by H.E. President Maada Bio, in this AYV video, afflicts our democracy.

“Anyone in The Bonthe District Who Says They Support APC Shall Die Early in The Morning” – is what President Bio is jocularly threatening in Mende language according to translators at AYV Media.

Even if it was said whilst laughing, it is so distressing. I don’t find it funny. It’s not a Joke to me.

I doubt if President Museveni of Uganda will ever make such vile comments about his country’s democratic opposition party.

Then there was the ‘joke’ yesterday by H.E. Bio around civil war amputations. That exact same joke could have been said with the same jocular effect, using any other analogy other than the bitter memories of ‘cut hand’ as reference.

Our President is no longer an ordinary citizen who can say anything in public. When he took Oath of Office 8 years ago, His Excellency Maada Bio immediately became the “Fountain of Honour” and the “Symbol of National Unity” according to Section 40(2) of our Constitution.

It means everything the President does in the public space, should symbolize National Unity in our Democracy. How does wishing death to APC supporters be a symbol of national unity?

Section 40(2) also means the President, as Fountain of Honour, in making jokes, should be Honourable in conduct.

Your Excellency Mr. President, with all due respects sir, you really nor day try for we.

AMADU BARONICINI CONTE

This irresponsible statement from a sitting president is a threat and disgrace to our democracy, those dangerous and reckless statements are deeply troubling the peace of our democracy.
Meaningful and patriotic Sierra leoneoes will not tolerate any single person to destroy the democracy that our grandfathers fought for.
This present regime should understand that they didn’t have any power to eliminate an idea whose time has come and they should also know that they don’t have the power to silence a depress nation that determined to be heard.

They can probably have the power to silence and intimidate folks that are within the country but they can NEVER silence folks like us.

The President and his administration should and must forcefully obligated understand that Sierra Leone belongs to all of us
‼️‼️And I quote;‼️‼️

“When one generation tolerates a sin, the next generation will celebrate that sin, and then the generation after that won’t know it’s a sin anymore.”
#The democracy of Salone matter.

*Threats of Death to APC Members and Supporters in Bonthe District Must be outrightly condemned”*

*By Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara* (*JFK)*

The reported statement made during the commissioning of the SLPP party office in Mattru, Bonthe District , and attributed to President Bio, suggesting death to citizens based on their support for the APC is profoundly disturbing and must be *unequivocally condemned*. Words carry weight, and when they are attributed to the highest office in the land, their impact is even more far-reaching and dangerous.

Such a statement, especially from a party leader, risks being interpreted not as mere rhetoric but as a signal, one that could embolden overzealous supporters to act outside the bounds of the law. The implications are serious: it threatens to normalize fear, deepen political division, and place innocent citizens at risk simply for exercising their democratic rights.

For APC members and supporters in Bonthe, this moment is a stark reminder of the *harassment and intimidation* you have long endured. Yet, it must also serve as a rallying point not for retaliation, but for renewed strength and unity. No citizen should ever feel unsafe because of their political affiliation. Democracy demands tolerance, respect, and the protection of all voices.

Leadership must inspire confidence, not fear; unity, not division. At a time when citizens look to their leaders for reassurance, words that incite anxiety and insecurity must be rejected in the strongest terms.

For even in moments like this, when the clouds seem heavy and the road uncertain, we must remember: threats will not weaken our resolve nor resilience.
*Joy is coming.*
