Sierra Leone’s Independence Day is April 27. However, Sierra Leoneans and Atlantans came together on Friday April 26, 2013 to celebrate Sierra Leone’s 52nd Independence anniversary.
The event featured a showcase of Sierra Leone at the City of Atlanta’s City Hall Atrium. Viewers could view videos, documents, and artifacts about the country’s literature, history, culture, tourism, and business.
The event was opened by Joe Beasley Esq, a civil rights icon, and SE region Director of the Rainbow Coalition. He congratulated Sierra Leone for her achievement of 52nd independence anniversary. Recalling his meeting with President Koroma in Atlanta, he commended Present Koroma for his tireless work toward achieving prosperity for Sierra Leoneans. Mr. Beasley concluded by introducing the Hon. Consul of Sierra Leone in Georgia, Mrs. Cynthia Oremi Jarrett-Thorpe, whom he praised for having undertaken the task of setting up this auspicious occasion.

The Hon. Consul spoke of the achievements of President Koroma and highlighted the economic growth, available investment opportunities, Fun and Sun adventures, and Cultural tourism in Sierra Leone. Additionally, she explained the importance of the event for Sierra Leoneans, who are eager to showcase their country’s new standing on the world stage. The Hon. Consul then invited all present to join in the offerings of the event.
The 27th of April was proclaimed as the Sierra Leone Day in the City of Atlanta by City Council member Kwanza Hall, Esq. He also congratulated Sierra Leone on the 52nd Independence Anniversary with wishes of continued economic prosperity.
The State of Georgia Representative Tyron Brooks read Governor Nathan Deal’s letter of congratulation. Governor Deal congratulated Sierra Leone for her independence and thanked the Consul for hosting the event.
Mr. Sylvester Schmidt, a German engineer, who had managed road construction projects in Sierra Leone, ranging from Congo Cross Bridge to the Manor River road construction, proposed a toast to Sierra Leone. All raised their glasses of Palm Wine to the health and prosperity of Sierra Leone.
Guests viewed business development video, browsed the cultural displays, networked and feasted on the traditional foods and drinks of Sierra Leone.
In closing, Ade Thomas, Esq., interim president of the newly formed Alliance of Sierra Leone Associations in Georgia ASLAIG, thanked the Carlton-Carew Ep Foundation the event’s sponsor, the volunteers, and attendees for their role in making the 52nd independence Anniversary of Sierra Leone a festive and memorable occasion for all.
