Protesting students of Njala University were brutally manhandled and beaten mercilessly by riot squad of the Sierra Leone Police Force yesterday, raising the troubling spectre that police highhandedness and brutality of the bad, old days may be returning.
Since this new SLPP Government came to power last year, the Police has reverted to its old style of enforcement, using violence and brutality –A menace that Sierra Leoneans thought they had said goodbye to since the end of the war when a new police force was trained.
For over 15 years before last year, Sierra Leoneans rejoiced at what they thought was a new dispensation, the era of police restraint and professional handling of protests by citizens . But things have changed . We are back to the dark days of the 1960s through the 1990s. The Police has committed many atrocities since last year.
Yesterday, concerned citizens took to the social media to express concern and share photos of police brutalizing the Njala students.
CHAOS BROKE out on the Njala University Bo campus when students went on the rampage because the college authorities stopped them from taking their exams. The university authorities said that all students must pay their fees 100℅ before they take their exams. That sparked the tension.
When you have thugs masquerading as police officers. Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone, are you listening? Time to start putting an end to this thuggish behavior in the guise of policing. And they have the obscene hypocrisy to call the SLP "A Force for Good".😱😱😱
