Leone Stars’ qualification hangs in a balance

LEONE STARS’ QUALIFICATION HANGS IN A BALANCE

Because they could do no better than force home side Lesotho to a goalless draw in Maseru today, Leone Stars have edged closer to the exit door in the 2020/2021 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers, unless results work in their favor in the Nigeria-Benin match. If Nigeria wins, we will still be in it.

If Benin take even one point from Nigeria in their clash in Cotonou today, by drawing the game, Leone Stars will be eliminated, even if they beat the very Benin in their last match. This will be the reward for not being able to take advantage of goal scoring opportunities and conceding a late equalizer to Lesotho in the first leg at the Siaka Stevens Stadium last year.

Leone Stars had better chances of beating Lesotho and Nigeria in Freetown but they blew them through atrocious finishing before goal.

However, if Nigeria defeat Benin, Leone Stars can still qualify if they can thrash Benin by two goals to nil, if Benin do not score against Nigeria today while losing as Sierra Leone would hope.

We await to see what happens in Cotonou later today. These could be late drama and fireworks.
