Social media political activists are calling on all Sierra Leoneans to wear black and come out into the streets tomorrow to mourn the present unstable and unhappy state of the nation, according to Whatsapp audios doing the rounds. They are also asking citizens to boycott all ceremonies marking the 60th Independence Anniversary at the National Stadium tomorrow.
It is not known whether these calls will be heeded .
However, Freetown looked like a Police State today, with armed security forces patrolling the streets and mounted armed officers in police and army on top of vehicles .
The Inspector General of the Police, Ambrose Michael Sovula and soldiers of the presidential guard recently threatened dire reprisals on people who disturbed the peace during the celebrations.
But political activists doubt whether the government wil go ahead with a crack down when at lease four heads of state of West Africa and some foreign dignitaries are in Freetown to grace the celebrations.
The government could be caught between two minds. They might have a compelling need to ensure law and order but at the same time they are aware that it will be potentially damaging if they overreact and it leads to serious outbreak of disorder in front of all the foreign guests.
