Another brewing storm that would have wreaked havoc in the opposition All People’s Congress ( APC ) has been averted .
Two days ago, journalist Amadu Lamrana Bah reported that Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh would be traveling to the U.S. with a delegation comprising opposition APC Parliamentary Minority Leader Abdul Kargbo , civil society leaders and members of the Political Parties Regulation Commission ( PPRC ) and the renegade All Political Parties Association ( APPA ) to engage the U.S Congress and the Millennium Challenge Corporation ( MCC ) .
The purpose of the engagement would have been to convince U.S congressional members and the MCC that the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) government was committed to continue the implementation of the agreement of national unity contained in the communique signed by the SLPP and APC after mediated inter-party talks to break the tumultuous impasse and stem the chaos that set in after the June 24 2023 elections which local and international elections observers and international stakeholders like the U.S, Britain, the EU and others accused the government of rigging. If they succeed in their diplomacy, the SLPP would then succeed in having the U.S. Congress- imposed travel sanctions on the government lifted and the U.S $500 million Compact Grant released.
As soon as the Amadu Lamrana Bah article landed, APC members and supporters started fuming about the mention of the name of their parliamentary minority leader among the delegation. They contended that if MP Abdul Kargbo made the trip, it would constitute another sellout by the APC and betrayal of the party because the trip had no redeeming value for the country . It was self-serving and designed to fool the U.S. Congress and the MCC that they were in compliance with the communique when they were not and were busy still trashing the country and harassing, oppressing and suppressing opposition members and innocent citizens. Some members even advocated for Hon. Abdul Kargbo to be expelled from the APC, if he made the trip with the SLPP to the U.S. Many asked how could Hon. Kargbo be representing the APC in Parliament and allow himself to be used to give international goodwill and authenticity to the enemy , who have falsely accused the leader of the party , Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, of Treason and placed him under house arrest ? Traveling with the team would also give the impression that the HON. did not care about the sufferings being undergone by APC members and innocent citizens at the hands of the tyrannical SLPP .
Supporters of Mr. Abdul Kargbo however assured the public that he would never be party to the SLPP perfidy to use the opposition they were abusing to accomplish their self-serving and narcissistic ambitions . “ Hon. Kargbo is a man of integrity. He is not a sellout “, one supporter said on social media.
It turned out to be true as Hon. Abdul Kargbo soon announced that he would not be making the trip.
Without the parliamentary leader of the APC to help them sell the lie that they were in compliance with the provisions of the communique, the SLPP must have realized that the trip was futile to make the trip. Soon, the Chief Minister announced that he has postponed the trip because he had engagements that demanded his presence in Sierra Leone.
