The University of Sierra Leone, already encumbered by frighting falling academic standards, is in shambles and has been crippled by unlawful political interference into the administration of the institition by the Maada Bio – led Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP ) government .
A government that does not know how to obey rules, the law and the constitution went ahead on January 30, 2024 and dissolved the Court of the University of Sierra Leone, contrary to law and in violation of legal provisions outlined by the University Act. The government then went on to make illegal appointments contrary to the University Act, which have been rejected by the Academic Staff Association. The Association has refused the appointment of Dr. Aiah Lebbie as Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University because he was illegally appointed.
The action of the SLPP Government has brought the university to a standstill with angry students unable to graduate or matriculate.
What President Bio has done to interfere politically in the university as he has done to almost every institution he has destroyed —Parliament, the Judiciary, the Elections Commission, the Anti-Corruption Commission ( ACC), the army and the Police, the national broadcaster , SLBS; the Foreign Service, etc. etc . has the capacity of further killing university education in the country.
The imposition of Maada Bio on the people of Sierra Leone in 2018, via a regime change spearheaded by the then British High Commissioner, Guy Warrington, has cost Sierra Leone so much. After killing other institution, Maada Bio has now targeted the university.
It is a shame that unlike the neighbours in Liberia, Senegal, Guinea , Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and even Nigeria, cowardly Sierra Leoneans have sat down supinely and seen their nation trashed for 5 years by this monster called Maada Bio.
