The restriction of freedom of speech and expression in Sierra Leone: 11 aŕrested for “going to welcome” ECOMOG

The Restriction of Freedom of Speech and Expression in Sierra Leone
By Reggie Cole – 16/9/24

The recent arrest of 11 individuals in Sierra Leone for welcoming ECOMOG to the country reveals the alarming erosion of fundamental freedoms, particularly freedom of speech and expression. John Steinbeck once said, “the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world,” and he was right. A healthy democracy requires the liberty to express ideas, even those that challenge the government or the prevailing norms.

In Sierra Leone, the restriction of these freedoms is not just an infringement on human rights, but a direct assault on the collective voice of its citizens. By suppressing dialogue and dissent, we stifle progress and the exchange of ideas crucial for societal growth. Steinbeck reminds us to fight against any force—be it government, religion, or ideology—that limits individual expression. Sierra Leone must reassert its commitment to these liberties if it hopes to foster a society where freedom of the mind is truly respected.

Without the ability to express oneself freely, Sierra Leone risks losing its most valuable resource: the ideas and voices of its people. True progress depends on the right to think, question, and speak.

Following the update yesterday, Sierra Leone Police released a small number of the arrested individuals mostly those who were later identified and taken to Port Loko.

It is confirmed that the remaining 9 suspects are arraigned for committing larceny and were not part of those who planned to welcome the ECOMOG troops.
