The Ministers of Foreign Trade and Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Mrs. Lilianne Ploumen and Mrs. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaaert respectively paid a courtesy call on President Ernest Bai Koroma at State House on Thursday 8 January, 2015.
President Koroma welcomed the delegation and expressed satisfaction that such a high powered delegation was visiting at such a momentous time in the country’s history. He highlighted the efforts government is making to break the chain of transmission, and added that more labs and treatment units have been deployed; a situation that has improved the response considerably.
He also explained that with the adoption of the proper protocols and with support from the international community, there is now need for proper coordination and efficiency in the approach to end the outbreak.
The president also mentioned that there is now growing confidence among local staff that Ebola can be contained, citing Hastings Treatment Center as a case study of what local resources could do to make the required difference.
President Koroma reiterated the need to redouble efforts to ensure the social mobilization drive for community involvement and ownership is intensified, and disclosed that he will resume his tours of districts to give a final push to the war against Ebola. He called for more intervention from the international community to cut down the transmission rates and eradicate the virus from the country.
“We need to resume doing the things that made us atractive to investors as quickly as possible,” he said.
The Netherlands Minister of Foreign Trade commended President Koroma for his leadership and handling of the national response to stop the transmission of the disease.
